Amazon.co.uk Review Perhaps it didn’t ignite the box office in quite the way it’d been hoped, but that’s little reason to pass over the qualities of The Golden Compass now it arrives on DVD. Based on the Phillip Pullman novel His Dark Materials--itself the start of the Northern Lights trilogy, the film isn’t without a few problems, but emerges as a quality adaptation. And you certainly can’t fault The Golden Compass for sheer ambition. The story, for those new to the series, is primarily that of 12-year old Lyra, who is in search of her friend who has been kidnapped. Naturally, this proves to be quite a challenging adventure, not least because it’s through Pullman’s vividly imagined world, crossing dimensions as Lyra travels. The film, while toning down and fiddling with some elements of the source material, stays quite close to the book, and it proves to be a good, if not Lord Of The Rings-standard, adaptation. What helps The Golden Compass, on top of the strong effects work and scope of the production, is a solid cast, featuring the likes of Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman and Dakota Blue Richards. And it certainly whets the appetite for the next instalment in the series. Whether the muted box office returns put pay to that remains to be seen: for now, at least, The Golden Compass is a good, solid family movie that’s easy to enjoy. --Jon Foster

Leaves you wanting more..., 2010-07-28 Closely follows book one of the trilogy and leaves you wanting more - which is unlikely to happen.
Execellent, 2010-01-19 I bought this film as my sons stared in it and he signed it for Blue Peter
golden compass, 2010-01-07 wow! i realy enjoyed this film and hoping there's a sequel. I thorght it to be a mixture of wizardry and fantasy that families would enjoy watching together.
okay, 2010-04-04 Well, I read the book many years ago, and therefore, by the time this film came out, I had pretty much forgotten what had happened in the book, so I can be impartial there.
But I watched this and thought 'meh'. Bad description, I know, but apt. I enjoyed watching it, but was glad when it was over, and I don't think I would ever watch it again, unless I had no choice. It wasn't a bad film, but it just wasn't engaging enough, and the characters weren't deep or interesting enough for me to really be that bothered about what happened to them.
I must say, they did the talking animals (or daemons) very well, and this is coming from someone who genuinely hates talking animals in films, so that is at least something.
From what I remember of the first book, it was enjoyable at best, so that perhaps contributes to my average liking of the film.
i really feel that there is a lot more could have been done with the film. There are brilliant ideas laid down by Pullman, but they never really come out. I think this film is a case of the book that should have remained a book. The description the books give you and what you conjur up in your own imagination, is a hundred times better than anything you could see in this film. This goes for many films too.
So all in all, an average film, worth a watch once, but don't expect too much from it.
The Golden Compass, 2010-05-31 As I have read and thoroughly enjoyed the books I was a little dissappointed that it wasn't exactly the same! But then what movie based on a book ever is! I felt that it had brilliant special effects, wonderful directing and excellent acting by the actors and actresses! A must see if you are a fan of the books if only to seal in your imaginations what Lara looks like! This 2 disc special is packed with extras that are just as enjoyable as the film! But again would only recommend to fans of the books!
