Amazon.co.uk Review A triumphant return for DCI Gene Hunt, Ashes To Ashes takes some of the characters from the superb time-shifting police drama Life On Mars, and moves the action to the early 1980s. So it’s out with the Cortina, in with the Audi Quattro, and straight down to some terrific television. Joining DCI Hunt -- again played with terrific force and stature by Philip Glenister -- is Keeley Hawes, as DCI Alex Drake. Like John Simm’s character in Life On Mars, DCI Drake suddenly finds herself in 1981, with no clear reason why. This provides the platform for another terrific show, the first series of which is fully present and correct here. Ashes To Ashes is tonally a little different from Life On Mars, but maintains the wonderful attention to period detail (and a healthy 80s soundtrack to match), and the willingness to mix in some fun alongside the serious business of police work. Ashes To Ashes is some achievement. It grounds out an identify for itself, stepping out of the shadow of Mars. And the rapport between Hawes and Glenister is a real highlight. But there’s so much to enjoy here, backed up by the promise of another series in the offing. For now, though, there’s plenty to get your teeth into here, thanks to a quality, very British drama that’s simply compelling television. --Jon Foster

Brilliant Series, 2010-08-15 This follow on from Life on Mars is a brilliant series and Gene Hunt is a classic. We have now watched all three of the Ashes to Ashes series and it's strange twist at the end. I'll say no more except watch it for yourself.
Just now wondering where Gene Hunt will appear next?
Excellent!!!, 2010-08-18 After watching series 3 of this show, I felt I needed to see the story from the beginning. I started off by borrowing Life On Mars series 1 and 2 off a friend and I totally loved it! I then ordered series 1 of Ashes, and I was amazed. After watching Life on Mars, I didn't think Ashes would be as good, but I was plesantly surprised. The acting is brilliant, there are some great one liners from Gene Hunt, and I am looking forward to series 2 dropping through my letter box! A must have for anyone who enjoyed Life on Mars!
Tongue in cheek, 2010-07-27 It is unfortunate that the producers decided to go with a tongue in cheek approach to this series. Life on Mars was more gritty and gripping.
If you like a tongue in cheek then this production is fine, well done. Personally I enjoy a straighter production. The costumes that Alex Drake wears are bizarre and erodes credibility. In fact, the characters are more caricatures.
Gene Hunt and his two cronies are effectively a comedy trio. Which is a pity as Gene was a superb role in Life on Mars.
The first episode has a shoot out with the baddies, that could have come from the Keystone cops! Both Chris Skelton and Ray Carling's characters would fit better in the 80s comedy Hi De Hi...
Overall, the programme is to viewing, as to what fast food is to dining. Ok at time but quickly forgetable...
never again, 2010-08-16 I will never use this seller again I emaailed this person three times and did not get a response in the end I got a refund threw Amazon if I could give this person an even low rating I would, do not use this seller it is a con
Shameful blot on "Life on Mars" memory., 2010-08-03 This is a crying shame, after the excellent 16 episodes of "Life on Mars" the bbc decide to insult viewers with this drivel. Keely Hawes acting is an embarrasment to watch, I'm not kidding it is really awful and the character she trys to play is so ridiculous it's beyond belief. What were the bbc trying to do?? If you enjoyed "Life on Mars" don't watch this as it will taint the excellence of it. I am going to try really hard to pretend this dreadful rubbish never happened, but it's too late it's already in my mind, please pray for me.
