Average rating of 4/5 Excellent film about reconciliation, 2010-08-05
This is an excellent first-time effort by director Philippe Claudel, better known as the author of such prize-winning novels as Brodeck's Report. It will surprise nobody who sees it that the film, its director, and its two leading actresses - Kristin Scott Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein - have between them won a string of major prizes: for once there is no hype involved.

The story is a deliberately-paced family drama somewhat in the mould of Eric Rohmer's - which makes the dinner-table gag at Rohmer's expense all the sweeter - but it's driven less by conversation in the Rohmer manner than by some extraordinary, almost wordless acting. I don't believe Scott Thomas has ever been better, and Zylberstein almost matches her. Scott Thomas plays a woman who has been imprisoned for fifteen years and has emerged missing several layers of skin, expecting rejection and disappointment at every turn. Zylberstein is the younger sister who is determined to reintegrate her into ordinary life. Both actresses are completely credible in their roles, and the excellent supporting cast allows them to build quiet performances of great intensity in which strong emotion is most often conveyed by tiny changes of expression.

Films like this are why people still bother with French cinema: nothing so adult comes out of Hollywood.

French language with English subtitles. The DVD includes a good interview with the director and producer.

Average rating of 5/5 A great fil, 2010-06-12
This is one hell of a film, all the actors play their roles fantastically. This film enthralls you right from the beginning when you are left with this curiosity about why Juliette is the way she is, as the films go on you get the answers to your questions.

Average rating of 3/5 Honestly, I can't tell, 2010-05-22
The packaged arrived in excellent condition, but this particular disk was shrink-wrapped, as opposed to the normal packaging. I didn't think much of it, but after I removed the shrink wrap I was able to notice that the package was most definitely used, as the plastic covering had scratches and other tell-tale wear that you do not get with new purchases. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed, but as I had this disk imported to the States, the hassle of returning it would probably be more trouble than it is worth. I would have been fine with accepting this, if it were not for the fact that this is a Region B blu ray, and there was no way for me to tell from the listing that it was not region free. I've purchased several movies from Amazon.co.uk, and I am very careful about only purchasing ones that will play on Region A players, and usually I am absolutely thrilled with my purchases. Not so this time. An unviewable used disk. I am indeed, disappointed. Just so you know that I am being fair about this, I've also purchased Forrest Gump and Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory with this order. Both of those are in perfect condition and are viewable from my Region A Blu Ray player. In all, I've purchase over a dozen blu ray disks from this site over the past few months, this one is my first disappointment.

Average rating of 5/5 An involving and touching modern masterpiece, 2010-06-02
Director Phillipe Claudel, presents us with a film that follows the "less is more" method of film making in this hypnotising French drama. The story centres on Juliette (Kristin Scott Thomas) who is reunited with her sister, Lea (Elsa Zylberstein), after 15 years of seperation. We learn that Juliette has been in prison for this period and Lea is letting her stay at the house she shares with her husband, whilst she attempts to rebuild her life. One of the film's great strengths is the cleverly structured dialogue which forms the secretive shadow over Juliette's incarceration. However, the ghostly and guilt-ridden performance of Scott Thomas as Juliette is the film's high point, undoubtedly a feat requiring unusual strength and skill. The ingenuity of Claudel casting her as Juliette as the lead has resulted in one of the best performances of Kristin Scott Thomas' career. One that is unlikely to be equalled by her.

Despite the film's difficult subject matter, the film involves it's audience insomuch that it moves us from the solitude of misery and feeling lost to giving us a real sense of hope.

I've Loved You So Long is a striking and mesmerising work and whilst Elsa Zylberstein more than holds her own, ultimately the film belongs to Scott Thomas.

Average rating of 5/5 Scott Thomas Shows Ability as a Tragedienne, 2010-08-01
"I've Loved You So Long," ("Il ya longtemps que je t'aime") (2008) a French-speaking feature film, a drama/ mystery, and an exemplar of French "intimisme,"was first released in March 2008 in Belgium. It stars one of everyone's favorite English actresses, Kristin Scott Thomas (Four Weddings And A Funeral [DVD] [1994];The English Patient [DVD] [1997]). As a DVD, it comes to us, fortunately enough, with a choice of subtitles, or dubbed English. But back to Scott Thomas; what a bang-up year the woman has had, what with "I've Loved You So Long," and its close companion feature,Tell No-One (Ne Le Dis A Personne) [DVD] [2006], also in French, which also achieved art house release here, probably due to her presence in the cast. She has married a French citizen, I understand, and taken up residence there, which goes to explain her sudden presence in French movies.

The film, which was nominated for two Golden Globes, was written and directed by Philippe Claudel: it is ably carried by the superior acting of Scott Thomas, who surely deserved her Golden Globes nod, and ought, perhaps, to have done even better than that. It concerns Juliette Fontaine, a frail woman, and a trained doctor, struggling to adjust herself to life, and her family, after having served 15 years in prison for the death of her son. Many scenes are heart-wrenching tennis matches, between Scott Thomas, and Elsa Zylberstein, who plays her sister Lea, and never misses a shot, either. I'd have to characterize it as a woman's picture, and a weeper, as well, emphasizing, as it does, children, emotion, love and other feelings. I was moved by the film's emphasis on these verities: to me, they are the straw we need to build the bricks that make our lives worthwhile: and while I'm at it, let me add that I doubt any audience member would ever think the intelligent Scott Thomas would commit the crime for which she has been jailed without an overwhelmingly good reason. But she surely does work up a head of emotional power, and, for an actor who began her career as a light comedienne, can now lay claim proudly to that traditional French theatrical title of acclaim: "tragedienne." Can literature's classic roles, such as Medea and Phaedra, be far behind?
