Average rating of 3/5 Well acted French drama, 2010-03-07
You should be aware that this film is in French with English subtitles.

It's an involving drama, focusing on a newly released prisoner (Kristen Scott Thomas) who goes to live with her sister and her family. We don't know for a while what she has done and don't know WHY she did what she did until nearly the end. However, it's easy to tell in advance that this will be a sympathetic crime and that the woman is a victim.

It reminds me of an Anita Brookner novel. It's a slice of life rather than a story. It's not a classic by any means but it's a decent enough film.

Kristen Scott Thomas speaks fluent French although doesn't get too much chance to show it off as her character is a woman of very few words and is definitely the silent, long suffering type.

Average rating of 1/5 What on EARTH is going on with the (almost non-existent) subtitles?, 2010-02-21

I loved this film when I saw it at the cinema a year or two back, so thought I would buy it. However, I'm so frustrated with it, that I've just ejected it from the DVD player and hurled it at a wall! The subtitles are ludicrously bad - there is one line of subtitle for every 6 or 7 lines of dialogue. If I hadn't already seen the film, I would not have a CLUE what was going on here....extremely important dialogue (showing the brother-in-law's unhappiness about the main character being in his home..) is not subtitled AT ALL!!!

Bloody disappointing and a complete waste of cash (unless I one day go and take French lessons....) Great film, complete rip-off of a product. How do I get my money back..?

Average rating of 2/5 disappointing, 2010-03-02
I really looked forward to this, and thought the premise quite interesting. I don't mind slow films which go somewhere, but I found this rather inconsequential. I had lost interest in Scott-Thomas long before this ground to a close. I had hoped there might be some investigation of her motives, not for her "crime" but for keeping quiet about her reasons for committing it. The plotline became very weak here, and I found the character of the little adopted girl a rather annoying, clumsy and Disney-esque inclusion. The "romance" too was introduced then allowed to fizzle away without really going anywhere. The fact that the man had taught in a prison was also chucked in and not developed. A dull film, well acted.

Average rating of 5/5 Powerful film, 2010-01-19
Got this because people in my French class were raving about it. It tells of the rebuilding of the relationship between two sisters, who have been seperated for a long time. One, the elder, has been in prison for for a serious crime and we find out the nature of that crime fairly early in the film. What we do not find out until almost the end is the reason for that crime. During the film we see how the sisters restart their relationship, how the elder becomes accepted by the younger's family and how the elder sets about trying to make a new life for herself.

The film, starring Kirstin Scott Thomas, every bit as fluent in French as in English, is in French with sub titles and is s fine portrait of one aspect of contemporary France.

Average rating of 5/5 Introvert account of re-integration., 2010-01-25
Plot of 'I've Loved You So Long' unfolds ever so slowly - and beautifully. Juliette has been inside for 15 years. Once released, her sister Léa offers Juliette board and lodgings at hers. There used to be a big bond between the two sisters. After 15 years doing time, both sisters take up where they left off. The reason for Juliette's captivity is revealed half way through, whereas her motivation, which brought her to commit a heinous crime, remains a secret, right up to the very end. With the secret eventually out in the open, Juliette considers herself to be fully re-integrated into society. In spite of the 'thriller'-elements, I wouldn't label ILYSL as such. It is a report of the insecurities and anxieties one encounters, being back into society after 15 years absense. In Juliette's case, she's helped along tremendously by Léa and her family. Even THEY fall out occasionally. ILYSL provides an insight into the mind of somebody who committed a major crime. Due to this exposion I very much sympathised with Juliette. Butter wouldn't melt if I said I'd not done the same, given the circumstances. Kristin Scott Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein acted outstandingly and director Philippe Claudel coached the entire cast into an intelligent and introvert account of re-integration, and everything it entails.
