Amazon.co.uk Review Katherine Heigl further cements her reputation as one of film's most dazzling, and go-to, romantic comedy heroines. In The Ugly Truth she brings her deft comic timing and true vulnerability to a film that avoids clichés, successfully, all the way until the surprising, quiet end. Heigl's partner in crime--and at first, in pure hatred--is the rakishly charming Gerard Butler. Heigl plays Abby, a career-bound TV producer, and Butler is Mike, an outrageous dude's dude whose public access show about what men want (one thing only) makes him so popular that he's hired to work alongside Abby, who naturally chafes at everything Mike stands for. Yet The Ugly Truth could not be more unpredictable, and men as well as women will like the refreshing story line and the crisp direction by Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde, Monster-in-Law). Both lead actors put their all into their performances, and the nuance and depth makes The Ugly Truth not just a great date-night film, but a testament on the primal human urge simply to connect. The Ugly Truth is more than a little raunchy, and it deserves its 15 rating, but there's hilarity in its crudeness. The supporting cast includes the delightful Cheryl Hines and John Michael Higgins as a tensely married couple forced to appear together on TV. And Eric Winter (Brothers & Sisters) is dreamy as Abby's potential love-match--as long as she doesn't have to be herself. The DVD includes mostly forgettable deleted and extended scenes, but also a gag reel that shows that the cast had every bit as much fun creating the film as the viewer has watching it. The Ugly Truth has never shined so brightly. --A.T. Hurley

The Ugly Truth, 2010-03-12 Very funny film, thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, would defininely recommend buying this, thought it might be a chick flick but guys would find it hilarious.
Not funny and very predictable, 2010-03-02 The Ugly Truth is a terrible film. As a romcom it fails at being both romantic and funny. The film tries to get its laughs through excruciatingly contrived set pieces which are so far removed from reality that they are just cringe worthy. Any of the scenes where they are filming their TV show(of which there are many)are good examples of this. The other attempted source of humour is the Gerard Butler character, which just involves him blurting out chauvinistic lines and innuendos while slurping coffee. Unfortunately his lines always seem to be trying too hard at being overtly 'controversial', while lacking the necessary wit to actually make them funny.
The plot= is the final nail in the coffin. It is so unbelievably predictable, following the tried and tested (and tired) romcom template. Katherine Heigl is the rigid, frigid control freak; Gerard Butler is the off the cuff, arrogant, chauvinistic pig. Will it be revealed that he actually has a heart? Could these two completely opposite characters realise that they are in fact meant to be together(in a frantic finale)? Well I couldn't possibly say. Unfortunately the film lacks any frills (ie. laughs) to distract you from its cut and paste plotline.
This is a film which could have been good throw away fun if it was just a little bit funny, but its not. It fails in providing any suspension of disbelief due to the contrived scenes and predictable plot; not to mention a scene in a hot air balloon, which is so badly blue screened it looks like something out of the 60's.
Great film, 2010-03-08 Many of my family and friends have watched it with me and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Ugly Truth - Fantastic, 2010-03-10 The Ugly Truth, a definite must watch film! Gerard Butler plays a fantastic part in the movie, and I must admit pretty much all of what he says is true. Watch it and see what you think.
Katherine Heigl plays a great part too, pointing out what we all do in our quest to find Mr Right.
A chick flick that even the guys will enjoy!!
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did :-)
Awful!, 2010-02-22 Was kind of expecting this to be your average romantic comedy, but was totally put off the moment Gerard Butler opened his mouth! Crude, lewd, vulgar..is how I would describe his lingo!! I know that that is how his character is supposed to be....I just think they went over the top with it, to the point that it was offensive. If what he says about men is true....then heaven help us all!! It could have been a nice little film, but I'm afraid it was just too base for me! Not recommended!!
