Amazon.co.uk Review
Richard Curtis turned his talents to telling the story of 1960s pirate radio with The Boat That Rocked. And while the film may not have scaled either the commercial or critical heights of some of his earlier work, there are still plenty of reasons to commend the film.

Chief among them is the excellent cast. The Boat That Rocked brings together a welcome collection of British talent, including Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost and Gemma Arterton, and then they’re joined by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Between them, they effectively recall the Radio Caroline story, as a pirate radio station is set up on a North Sea cruising yacht, broadcasting to England. Said broadcasts become wildly popular, making celebrities out of some of those concerned. Yet naturally enough, the authorities, led by Branagh’s Sir Alistair Dormandy, aren’t best pleased.

Curtis then laces The Boat That Rocked with plenty of comedy, and a killer soundtrack. But he loses his focus when editing the film down, as it’s a movie that, try as it might, still manages to outstay its welcome by a good 20 minutes. It doesn’t help that he’s simply trying to cram too much in here, and contrasted with the tight screenplays of some of his earlier films (take the script of Notting Hill as an example), it’s curious that he chooses to do so.

Yet quibbles aside, The Boat That Rocked is still a fine comedy, with a real love for its subject matter. It arguably works best in the home, too, over the big screen, and with many laugh-out-loud moments, and some memorable characters, it’s ultimately hard to resist the film’s many charms. --Jon Foster

Average rating of 5/5 Another brilliant story by Richard Curtis!, 2010-03-05
I live in the US but ordered this from the UK site because the UK version puts back about 20-25 minutes of the film that are just priceless! They stupidly changed the title of the movie in the US to "Pirate Radio". The original title is quite obviously more clever and appropriate. I was born in 1964 (In N. Ireland!) and so all of this was happening while I was in diapers but the soundtrack is still sublime! The acting is brilliant - once again each actor perfectly cast as with Curtis' other films (Love Actually and 4 Weddings and a Funeral).

The deleted scenes are hilarious and almost constitute another mini movie unto itself! I hope one of these days Curtis just says to hell with time constraints and just throws everything into the main movie. His films are so good that no one would notice if they are 3 and half hours long.... you completely enjoy hanging out with his characters.

If you've loved Curtis' other movies you'll love this one - and if you even remotely love the music from the 60's, the sampling in this movie is brilliant.

If you don't buy this, it will be a "spectacular mistake" - to quote Billy Nighy's character at the beginning.

By the way, for anyone worried about region coding - this disc played just fine in my region 1 player here in the US.

Average rating of 4/5 The Boat that rocked, 2010-03-05
Lots of fun....probably more for the generation to which I belong....since the days of sitting beside a crackling radio trying to find the pirate radio stations actually means something and brings back lots of memories !

Average rating of 2/5 The boat that rocked me to sleep!, 2010-03-08
So very disappointing. After waiting for this film to come out I was looking forward to a step back in time to the swinging 60's. I was so disappointed with the very weak storyline and lack of music. Another of these films with all the hype and the best bits shown before the film is released.

This is such a bad film I thought it might be a spoof send up of someone making a bad film. Unfortunately it's not. Cringeworthy stuff and not in a good 'Fawlty Towers' way but more in a 'how could anyone write such utter pony' way. I didn't smile from start to finish. Astonishingly bad.

Average rating of 3/5 Another Curates Egg, 2010-03-06
I think Richard Curtis peaked early with the sublime 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and has been slowly spiralling downwards ever since. This is better than 'Love Actually' in that it doesn't have as many corny, cheesy, implausible scenes and is generally very enjoyable. I didn't listen to the pirate stations, as Radio One was launched just as I was becoming interested in pop music, but I was very aware of them and so found the subject matter fascinating.
The soundtrack is excellent, but as usual, Curtis tries just a little too hard to uplift our spirits and manipulate our emotions, showing a lack of subtlety and finesse, and it is too long, with not enough plot to sustain it. Having said that, it is often funny, moving, involving and has an excellent, if slightly corny end.
