Amazon.co.uk Review One of the finest British comedies of the decade, In The Loop takes the genius of the small screen hit The Thick Of It, and fleshes it out into a blisteringly funny feature-length movie. Written and directed by Armando Ianucci, the film basically follows a plan between the American President and the British Prime Minister to begin a war, and spin it to their advantage. Naturally, not everyone is so keen on the plan, and the problems arise when Simon Foster, the Minister for International Development, declares that a war isn’t foreseeable, a statement that soon gets seized upon. Then In The Loop deploys its not-so-secret weapon, as enter stage left comes the tour-de-force that is spin doctor Malcolm Tucker. The character of Tucker will be familiar to fans of The Thick Of It, and here, he’s the absolute high point of a film packed with great moments. Foul-mouthed, vitriolic and a majestic comedy creation, much has been written in the past about Tucker’s similarities with Alastair Campbell. The parallels are startling, but it’s in Peter Capaldi’s outstanding portrayal of him that Tucker becomes the force of nature he is here. Bolstered by an intelligent and incisive script, In The Loop is both an outstanding comedy and a first-rate satire, that only loses its momentum slightly in its final act. Yet by that stage, it’s more than justified both your expense and your time, and it’s virtually guaranteed to stay resident on many people’s rewatch pile too. One of the finest films of 2009. --Jon Foster

Your swearing does not impress me. My husband works for Tower Hamlets and believe me those kids make you sound like... Angela La, 2010-03-10
Political dramas don't interest me that much as I follow the news but I make and exception for In the Loop.
I read the worst review first and I was amused that some of the reviewers didn't like the bad language. This is the old maids view. There is nothing wrong with bad language as long as it is integral to the story or in this case it is very funny
The swearing was very creative as the various characters were rude to each other in a myriad of different ways.
It was more like a documentary or a reality television show as you had to pick up quickly who everyone was rather than having the dialogue hammer it home.
I have watched it a couple of times and I will watch it a couple of times more as the language was so inventive and you can imagine that is what really goes on.
No one really knows what was going on in government and the various characters are covering up the cock up and the spin was hiding the reality that is if the government know was the reality even was.
In view of recent events in the British government such as the Iraq war and the expenses scandal this film was hardly a satire more of a hard news documentary.
When you look at how each party tries to spin insignificant points with a view to embarrassing the opposition all these seem very real indeed.
You know that politicians are guarding their words carefully and giving away as little as possible after having been briefed by their advisers as to how it is all going to sound.
I am going to give it five stars and those who didn't like the language can get stuffed.
"At the end of a war you need some soldiers left really, or else it looks like you've lost.", 2010-03-11 If you thought that things could get hostile between political parties then you ought to see the underhand tactics employed within this government department for international development. The back-biting and spin-doctoring step up a gear when a small fish ends up over the pond to try and tow the party line and keep quiet in front of the Americans.
Armando Ianuuci helped to create one of the most gloriously vitriolic comedies of all time with "The Thick of It", this film continues the relentless satire with all the familiar faces from the TV series. Although the characters have different names and roles, they are still essentially the same bunch - with the exception of Malcolm Tucker, he remains the same. It's clear to see why Tucker stays, it's obvious why he hasn't altered by one verbally offensive molecule; he's the perfect character to drive the film.
Peter Capaldi is so convincing as the manic spin doctor and he steals the film. Fans of "The Thick Of It" will already be familiar with the beautifully crafted outbursts full of language best described as colourful. I actually held my breath when Tucker was stopped in the street by an American who asked him to watch his "curse words" in anticipation of his reaction.
In The Loop captures the zeitgeist of the late 2000's when the masses were questioning the war in the middle-east, the film gets to the heart of the politics around the war and you get the distinct feeling that for all the outrageous moments of self-promotion, rivalry, and sycophantism that this is actually quite accurate. The comedy worked better in the TV series, but that's not to say that it particularly lacks here - the film starts to flag at points but it always picks itself up, usually when Tucker enters the room.
The sense of reality is heightened by the films loyalty to the TV series which spawned it, the same team of writers maintain their wry observation of the political scene, and the same director sticks with the documentary style, hand held camera. This is not a glossy Hollywood view of politics, this is a gritty angle and it doesn't hold back.
In a nutshell: Although I think this works better as a TV series, that's only because the TV series hit a level of excellence which is very rarely achieved. The film is a great way of taking a fantastic creation and utilising it to appeal to a wider audience, I hope that this isn't the only film we'll see and more will be produced. I enjoyed this and it left me wanting more Malcolm Tucker, fingers crossed we'll get some.
Swearily Fantastic, 2010-03-11 I'll keep this brief as there are already 72 reviews.
You will like this film if:
- You have ever seen "The Thick Of It" and liked it: I watched In the Loop first and then HAD to watch the entire back catalogue.
- You like Inbetweeners and want something more political and with more extreme swearing
- You find abuse and sarcasm funny. A bit like The Office mixed with Yes Minister with added Tourettes.
You won't like this if swearing offends you or if you hate juvenile, male banter.
Highly recommended, the sort of thing you can watch several times and find something new (and hilarious) every time.
Product and Service - Cracking film on blu-ray, 2010-03-04 The product came through swiftly and in perfect condition.
It's a great film, a highly comical, satirical look at the interactions between the lower echelons of the UK vs USA political administrations as they stumble, through incompetence and bloody-mindedness, towards an inevitable military intervention in the Middle East.
This is a stand-alone spin-off from the "Thick of It" BBC series, starring some of the same cast but in different roles - special note to Chris Addison and Tom Hollander; an excellent performance as a US General turned in by James Gandolfini, a first-class Peter Capaldi reprising Malcolm Tucker (the Numebr-10-Spin-Doctor nod to Alistair Campbell), and an interesting cameo from Steve Coogan, amongst many others.
Funny and unnerving in equal measure, the subtleties of the script and storyline lend themselves to a second and third watch, and this is the next logical dramatical progresssion from the romanticism of "The West Wing" from Armando Ianucci: the man who brought us "The Day Today" and the "Alan Partridge" dynasty.
A five out of five.
Sharp but scurrilous political comedy mockumentary movie, 2010-03-08 I never bothered with the TV series that preceded this film, but decided to give it a chance because of the outstanding reviews. And because Tony Soprano is in it.
Amazing to think the Scots kid from Local Hero could grow into such a potty mouth. I don't think In The Loop will have much of a future once the Iraq episode enters the distant past. It's true what one of my fellow reviewers says: this souped-up version of an episodic TV production doesn't capitalize on the big screen and fights shy of emotion or for that matter any sense of the characters' apparent estrangement from the seriousness of the situation. It's good that it resolutely avoids sentimentality or aggrandisement of the individuals, but some recognition of the gravitas of the situation wouldn't have gone amiss.
Much of the humour comes from foul language and bombastic confrontation: as such it's not half as witty, clever or informative as something like the incomparable Yes, Minister The Complete Yes Minister & Yes Prime Minister - Collector's Boxset [DVD], a show with which it is often compared but which is still relevant today. I also felt that all the gags came in the voice of the writer and never fully convinced as the utterances of the characters.
Maybe the political world village really is this scabrous, in which case I must commend Armando Ianucci for his insight. I loved Capaldi's face-off with Gandolfini, but I wouldn't rush to see this movie a second time. The problem today is that people feel unable to reform the political machine and this satire does nothing to make what happens seem anything other than inevitable.
