500 Days of Summer is like the American Apparel of movies, in that tries really hard to be hip--so hard it sometimes evokes an involuntary cringe. The perfect soundtrack (indie-pop infused with cleverly ironic 80’s hits), the smart cinematography, the occasionally broken fourth wall… It’s a natural progression from mid-00’s “youth-culture” flicks like Garden State and it does a good job rounding out the decade. Everything in this dramedy resembles a music video and the characters are twentysomethings once again not living up to their full potential. 500 Days of Summer is touted as being really unique and original--it’s not. But that’s not to say that it’s not worth watching; it is, and mostly because of the leads. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel play a couple whose relationship story is told through a series of out-of-order flashbacks. The non-linear storytelling means we hop moment to moment from sweet, romantic and fun to crushingly desperate and sad, because the ultimate point here is that even when we believe we may have found The One, said soulmate might not feel the same way. Gordon-Levitt is an exciting actor to watch and after a succession of very serious, very troubled roles, it’s a pleasure to see him here as a mostly well-adjusted young guy whose biggest problem is that he loves someone who doesn’t love him back. He’s the hero, and as such, Deschanel’s Summer Finn becomes the bad guy a little bit. But Deschanel plays it all big-eyed, conflicted and real and so you can’t help but forgive her. The much-lauded musical scene is tremendously joyful; if it doesn’t put a smile on your face, nothing will. 500 Days of Summer isn’t groundbreaking, but it's an entertaining movie about hip, beautiful people whose lives you can only enjoy for about two hours before getting back to your own.--Kira Canny, Amazon.com Stills from (500) Days of Summer (Click for larger image)

 Bring Back Richard Curtis all is forgiven, 2010-03-08
Cliched, predictable, sickly, unbelievable, characterless tripe with one of the worst ending lines in a film i think i have ever heard. If you are 12 years old with no idea of relationships and love you could do better than watching this. The male lead was pathetic and the female a complete b1tch. To say i found myself prefering Love Actualy is testament of how very bad this film is.

The film refuses to be shackled by the average Rom-Com formula. Unpredictable and innovative. Great direction, photography, acting, plot and script.
My favourite of 2009.
Best suited for the hopeless romantic or those who can appreciate good cinema and story telling. My friends disagree, they think its long and boring. I blame their inability to enjoy a good story which doesn't conform to the fairy tale formula. Its a love, hate film. Best rent before buying, IMHO.

reaaly good..not just for girls, 2010-03-11
ok this is mainly a girl flick, but it would appeal to the guys too. I went to see this with my mum at the cinema and we both loved it. My hubbie had seen the 'dancing' clip and said 'i'm not seeing that'. I told him he would really like it, so he watched it with me on DVD and did. This is not a lovey dovey film and is really funny!!
Dodgy film ... acting is decent though, 2010-02-15
Hear me out. First, the good things .... the acting is good, and it made me chuckle once or twice, but the film's plot is frankly a bit dodgy to live up to the marketing of a "click flick that men will like".
First, the plot is confusing - "this is not a love story, it's a story about love". What? The time switching does not serve the film in any way. I would hazard a guess that it is a plot device - to hide the implausible scenario of someone as physically attractive as the Professional Kook offering "free-love" to a greeting-card writer. If this happened in real life a Real Man would be grateful for such a gift. But of course, this is a "chick flick" so the Chick Flick Man falls in love with her - but wait a minute, I thought this wasn't a love story! I am confused. It's more complicated than Krypton Factor.
As a final observation, it is interesting that the film seems to suggest that the Chick Flick Man might have a chance of finding "The One" if he becomes an architect. Referring to the film's marketing, I doubt if this is something men would particularly want to hear, unless you are an architect of course! :)

one of the best movies of all time. really. it's sweet, original, heart breaking, funny...well, everything you could wish for! It's also refreshing in that sense that it's the boy who's doing the hunting and is attainable and not the girl (which is often the case in these kind of movies). Both Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt proves that they are two of the brightest stars in Hollywood.
