Amazon.co.uk Review
It's official: Ricky Gervais is a genius. He may not have cured cancer or discovered a new branch of mathematics, but having created The Office, Extras, and now The Invention of Lying has secured him a place in the history of comedy. The Invention of Lying imagines a world in which everyone unfailingly tells the truth; they don't even know what fiction is. Every thought, however humiliating or harsh, tumbles out unvarnished. Then one day, a desperate unemployed writer named Mark (Gervais) concocts a lie--and in a world where everyone is unfailingly honest, a lie is believed with total and absolute gullibility. Mark can get anything he wants...but the one thing he truly wants is the love of a girl named Anna (Jennifer Garner, Alias, Juno), and she's the one person he can't bring himself to lie to.

The Invention of Lying balances a brilliant overall idea with inspired comic bits and deft cameo turns by a star-studded cast (among the many famous faces in bit roles are Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Jason Bateman, Christopher Guest, Tina Fey, Jeffrey Tambor, and more). The second half of the movie, which follows Mark's romantic pursuit of Anna, isn't quite as marvelous as the gradual unfolding of the situation and Mark's grappling with his strange new ability, but that doesn't keep the movie from being a unique and dazzling comedy. Simply not to be missed. Also featuring comedian Louis C.K., Rob Lowe, and Jonah Hill. --Bret Fetzer

Average rating of 2/5 The Prevention Of Laughter, 2010-02-26
This film starts out with the one joke premise which the title itself explains adequately. A world with no lies, adverts, relationships etc etc all up front. Potential comedy gold and, to be fair, a few goods lines and moments come early on as you would expect.

The casting of Jennifer Garner as the love interest is odd as she comes across as a nervous spindly legged forest creature who has suddenly found itself transported to a semi detached house in Surbiton which itself has been lifted by helicopter to downtown LA for no particular reason. For such a key role they did need someone like Tina Fey to bounce these early jokes off... so she's in it as well to fill the void. Swank just pouts and stares at Ricky Gervais and trots out her devastating truths, that he's fat, isn't in her league and they won't be having sex. Forgetting the audience do have eyes and these things are generally thought and said in a world of lies as well.

This aside it does start well enough, although loosely and with very little direction or point. He has an annyeurism and tells a lie, avoiding the collapsing and drooling and painstaking road to recovery part. And on it goes like a Jim Carrey film without the gurning. Well, less.

Then comes the rub. Religion. The biggest lie of them all. I'm an atheist, I got a little excited, I like an intelligent dig at these things and I had not been expecting ths turn in the tale. Neither does Tina Fey as she disappears for half an hour. Garner starts to shiver and needs a blanket and a copy of 'Electra' in her trailer before her eyes burst. Ricky Gervais then gets stuck in to Religion.

And fails to do anything but sound obnoxious on the subject.

And isn't funny.

This is for about 50 minutes in total. Rendering this film about as (re)watchable as a Tuesday night episode of Emmerdale from 2004.

Watch it, make up your own mind... you might enjoy it, it might speak to you, it just didn't to me. This film or Religion, take your pick.

The forthcoming 'Cemetary Junction' will need to be Godfather Trilogy good to erase the memory of this one, I really like Ricky Gervais and genuinely hope it is. Or it's back to the 'Extras' box set instead of renting the follow up.

Average rating of 1/5 Absolute rubbish!, 2010-03-05
I took a chance when I purchased this DVD, having read other reviews but decided to try it for myself. I find Ricky Gervais normally very funny and entertaining, which is why I was really disappointed in The Invention of Lying. It can be described at best as being complete and utter drivel from beginning to the dreadful end. What a complete waste of time and money, but did make me realise that I should take other reviews more seriously in future!! Please save yourself the time and expense and give this dvd a very wide berth!! It was poorly acted, dreadful unbelievable script from beginning to end. I'm surprised that Mr Gervais even wants his name associated with this film its that bad!!

Average rating of 5/5 Loved it, 2010-02-26
I thought this was a lovely film, with more of a 'British' feel to the humour than there was in 'Ghost Town'. Gervais seemed more relaxed and played the part extraordinarily well and, to tell the truth, I'm surprised that anyone would give this film only 1 star because it ticked all the right boxes for me: humour, charm, sadness, and a really good cast (Jennifer Warner as his love interest was delightful throughout.)

Thank heavens I didn't read the reviews on here before I rented the film or I might never have seen it, and I would have missed out on a genuinely charming movie. So I'd suggest people simply decide whether they want to see the film or not, then add their thoughts here afterwards. I'm certain then the overall rating will improve.

Average rating of 4/5 Perfect in-flight movie, 2010-03-10
I confess I'd never actually heard of this film, until someone loaned it to me. While it isn't great cinema and it's not something I'd watch again in a hurry, I found the whole premise, and the way it played out, to be rather amusing, and an enjoyable, relaxing way of spending 90 minutes or so. It's just perfect for an in-flight movie (if the Almighty had not meant for us to fly, He would never have given us in-flight movies)

Average rating of 2/5 Invention, 2010-03-03
I bought this because i enjoyed Ghost Town and i like Ricky. It was okay, funny in places but not as good as Ghost Town.
