It's official: Ricky Gervais is a genius. He may not have cured cancer or discovered a new branch of mathematics, but having created The Office, Extras, and now The Invention of Lying has secured him a place in the history of comedy. The Invention of Lying imagines a world in which everyone unfailingly tells the truth; they don't even know what fiction is. Every thought, however humiliating or harsh, tumbles out unvarnished. Then one day, a desperate unemployed writer named Mark (Gervais) concocts a lie--and in a world where everyone is unfailingly honest, a lie is believed with total and absolute gullibility. Mark can get anything he wants...but the one thing he truly wants is the love of a girl named Anna (Jennifer Garner, Alias, Juno), and she's the one person he can't bring himself to lie to. The Invention of Lying balances a brilliant overall idea with inspired comic bits and deft cameo turns by a star-studded cast (among the many famous faces in bit roles are Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Jason Bateman, Christopher Guest, Tina Fey, Jeffrey Tambor, and more).  Thouroughly enjoyable, best comedy i've seen for a long while, 2010-06-14
First things first, this is a really entertaining, light hearted comedy film. OK, so the premise is a little unrealistic, but not more so than someone rising from the dead or turning water into wine!
If you're after a well thought out, subtle, dark comedy then this is not it......if you and your missus want a good laugh and a bit of easy going entertainment then this is perfect. The characters are somewhat stereotypical but that doesn't mean it's not funny and doesn't detract and Gervais is good as ever in his self deprecating way. The way the story drags religion kicking and screaming into the humour is brilliant and anyone who finds that distasteful or out of place needs to take a long look at themselves and their 'beliefs'.
IMHO, those religious plebs who complain and moan and throw their arms up in the air are proving precisely the point that Gervais is making humour of.....they simply can't think for themselves or have an open mind. Just put the film on, sit back and relax and enjoy 90 mins of fun! Great stuff.

This film is so bad it's as if David Brent had written it with Gareth Keenan as co-writer. The characters are all unlikeable in that identifiable way that cardboard characters are unlikeable. They may as well be wearing a t-shirt saying 'I'm an unlikeable character' on it.
The premise of the film isn't so much about inability to lie as about people thinking aloud. It's Harry Enfield's ginger baby sketch played out over an unbelievably unrewarding 96 minutes. The dialogue is overly repetitious, with a particularly cumbersome reliance on Gervais' character being called snub-nosed and fat. Over and over.
Tightly written comedy this ain't - I actually had to check the DVD case to make sure that Gervais was credited as a writer on it, and unfortunately, he is.
The only redeeming feature of this film is the minute long scene with Stephen Merchant and Barry from Eastenders.
0.5 out of 10. Gervais can do better than this.

Surprisingly good rom-com. With well thought of script, which to (an extent) underlines where you should and shouldn't lie. Great dry humor and with some surprise cameos from some of Ricky Gervais A list friends. I liked this film more than I thought I would!
Entertainment, 2010-07-17
Well, what a furrore about a movie! This is a piece of work that Ricky (who I do not particularly like) and his team should be proud of; because it is entertaining. There are no hidden messages (or if there are we can ignore them), and the film should be enjoyed at face valiue!
lying isn't that bad after all, 2010-07-14
being the type of person that can be painfully honest sometimes i found the film extremely amusing, Gervais does a great job portraying a nobody in a world where either you have to intelligent or your good looking to achieve anything i life, him being neither decides to give up until he wakes up one day and realise that he can say "something that wasn't" from there on he decides to change his life using lies, as good intentioned as he is with most of the lies he tells he soon comes to realise that lying can cause more problems than he expected.
there are a couple of great scenes, first time we meet Garner and how she says exactly what she thinks at every moment, the scene with his mother in hospital, his 10 commandments on pizza boxes and the "true" story of the black plague.
i did find some parts of the film where unnecessary and only made if slow down also the writers concept of truth seemed to be to say everything that was on your mind or everything you did without being asked what they was doing or thinking.
