Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau team up after their '90s career-making hit, Swingers, to write and costar in Couples Retreat, a romantic comedy that's heavy on the satire, but is also knowing and wry, as Swingers is at its best. Vaughn and Favreau are joined in the top-notch cast by the always engaging Kristin Bell (whose appearance with Vaughn, in a romantic tropical setting, may remind viewers of Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Jason Bateman, Kristin Davis (Sex and the City), Faizon Love, and Jean Reno. Fans of romantic comedies, and comedies of manners, will be delighted at the snappy interaction among the actors, and the zingers delivered by the script. "You are not buying some 20-year-old broad a motorcycle!" yells Vaughn's character, Dave, to Love's character, Shane, who's having an early midlife crisis. "She's a kid! Buy her a Hello Kitty book!" Turns out that all the couples in Dave and Shane's circle are having issues, and decide to take a group tropical vacation. Ah, but there's a catch: the island getaway comes with mandatory couples counseling and bonding events. Most of the film's laughs come from cringe-worthy fish-out-of-water moments, though there are some pretty great fish-in-water moments, too: Dave begins to panic during a test involving swimming with sharks. "It's time to get the gun, and shoot some fish!" Reno is also a standout, as the unctuous New Age-y director of the retreat, fearless in spewing half-nonsense yet having the almost admirable courage to stand behind his convictions. The film was directed with a light hand by Peter Billingsley, who starred as young Ralphie in A Christmas Story, and who has acted with Vaughn in Four Christmases and The Break-Up.  Did I hear the word "comedy" ?, 2010-08-24
I always thought that the word "comedy" meant funny - perhaps I was wrong, maybe it means badly cast characters, daft storyline & situations - mmm No, I do know what comedy is, and this certainly was NOT funny ! Only good thing about the movie was the scenery - what a shame !

Was very disappointed in this DVD. Usually like Vince Vaughn, but this was really rubbish.

But don't buy this. Borrow or rent. Because even the great cast and some hystercial one-liners do not make this film worth a permanent shelf-space.
4 couples, with 4 different problems, as Leo Tolstoy sad, "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way". Some don't even know they are unhappy until they are seated in front of the therapist who opens their eyes to the undenying fact. Therefore it's quite possible that for some people "Couples Retreat" could be quite an uncomfortable watch, but then, there is hope for all of us struggling through an unhappy patch - we should go on holiday! (I am being sarcastic here.)
By the end of the film (and couples' week in Bora Bora), all their problems are wonderfully easily solved and they all return to the continental USA ignited with love and newly found respect for each other. Quite enjoyable film, the views are fantastic, the yoga scenes hilarious and the deleted scene in a gay bar is worth checking out.

 Good Fun-Loving Film, 2010-06-15
This film is a great, fun-loving film that will really get you in the holiday mood! It is based on the idea of struggling couples who go to this island in search of relighting their fire, each discovering they have more problems than they thought.
It was filmed at the St. Regis resort in Bora Bora and the setting is truly breathtaking!!
Bearing this in mind, the scenery still does not detract from the short, funny quips that the film has to offer - with noticeably good performances from ALL the cast. (Some of whom are only familiar faces in previous commedies.) Even Jean Reno's character - Monsuire Marcel - is fantastically funny yet still believable as a therapist.
The film is light-hearted and inoffensive with some awkward, yet funny scenes involving a good-looking yoga instructor and in contrast, Vince Vaughn is covered in chum, then overly exaggerates his experience with some small reef sharks! (Amusing the others at dinner.) Both these scenes and some others (such as the Guitar Hero playoff) in the film make it an enjoyable watch and it is definately worth the price.
However the film does lack an in-depth story and has a somewhat predicatable ending - but what more do you want from this genre anyway??
For those who enjoy a light-hearted giggle and some hilarious episodes, with a bit of originality, this film is worth the watch. If you are looking for some intense acting and a hard-talking storyline, then this is not your kind of film.
