Since crime auteur Michael Mann, like his protagonists, plays by his own rules, Public Enemies eschews back story and motivation for a closely-observed, action-packed examination of men at work. FBI supremo J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) kick-starts a nationwide manhunt when he proclaims John Dillinger (Johnny Depp, in top form) Public Enemy #1. Hoover taps Agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) to bring the Tommy Gun-toting bank robber in by any means necessary (the agency also targets Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson). If Dillinger had split the scene then and there, he might have enjoyed a happier fate, but he falls for beautiful coat-check girl Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard, whose open-hearted performance makes her the most sympathetic character in the film). In the end, though, Dillinger is the captain of his own destiny: his loyalty to his girl and his gang overpowers his desire to live free. Though the director also set his first film, Thief, and third series, Crime Story, in his native Chicago, Public Enemies plays more like Heat in Depression-era garb. In that L.A. policier, Al Pacino's cop develops a grudging r...

Finally making its Blu-ray bow, The Ultimate Bourne Collection defies the convention for how these things are supposed to work. The theory runs that a trilogy’s best film is the first, and it’s a case of diminishing returns from that point onwards. The Bourne movies? They just keep getting better and better.

Things kick off well with The Bourne Identity, which introduces Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. When we meet him, he’s no idea who he is, but he quickly learns that he’s in possession of some quite extraordinary, and lethal, skills. The film is slap bang on the money for the first two thirds, before a slightly muddled last act. Yet it still gets the franchise off to a good start.

The directorial reigns passed over from Doug Liman (of Swingers and now Mr and Mrs Smith fame) to Paul Greengrass (United 93, Bloody Sunday) for The Bourne Supremacy, and it proved to be a wise choice. Supremacy is a faster, more intense film, that this time sees Jason Bourne framed for murder, and gradually closing in on the secrets of his part. It’s pulsating stuff.

The icing on the proverbial cake though is the superb <...

Now this is how you destroy the world. Roland Emmerich's 2012 pounces on a Nostradamus-style loophole in the Mayan calendar and rams the apocalypse through it, gleefully conjuring up an enormous amount of Saturday-matinee fun in the process. A scientist (Chiwetel Ejiofor) detects shifting continental plates and sun flares and realizes that this foretells the imminent destruction of the planet. Just as the molten lava is about to hit the fan, a novelist (John Cusack) takes his kids on a trip to Yellowstone; later he'll hook up with his ex (Amanda Peet) and her new boyfriend (Tom McCarthy) in a global journey toward safety. If there is any safety. The suitably hair-raising plot lines are punctuated--frequently, people, frequently--by visions of mayhem around the globe: the Vatican falls over, the White House is clobbered (Emmerich's Independence Day was not enough on that score), and the California coastline dives into the Pacific Ocean. Unlike other action directors we could name, Emmerich actually understands how to let you see and drink in these vast special-effects vistas--and they are incredible. He also honors the old Irwin Allen disaster-movie tradition by ac...
Average rating of 5/5 FOR THOSE WHO GO TO MOVIES., 2010-03-08
So it is 2012 and the Mayans were right when they send the world was going to come to an end, but this is no film about stalking catacombs or a couple of heroes trying to stop the event and by the way it is not a film for the type of person who wants to spend two hours having their social awareness stimulated.

This is a movie in the original sense of the word.
In the old days they used to put lists on the bill boards of the epic things you were going to see when you paid your money and they put the thrills up there on the screen in return for your money so this film fits right in that corner. You get to see what happens when the San Andreas fault splits and Old Yellowstone blows its top and the Granddaddy of all tidal waves and there are some truly funny running jokes in this visual treat. yes the humour is black, but this is about the end of the World folks. To go to a movie like this and complain about the storyline is akin to going to a Circus and then complaining that the evening lacked the gentility of a night at the theatre watching Shakespeare.

The film is a Roller coaster ride (almost literally). You take the slow ride up to the top and away you go. All it requires is a desire to enjoy yourself. I wonder how many people sat through the original King Kong and moaned about the fake Monkey? and no I am not comparing this film to King Kong.
Yes the script could have been better, but then I am still laughing at the fact that Avatar was nominated for for best film even though being a copy of the old cartoon film - Fern Gully.
Possibly the best written film I watched in recent years was Dark Knight, but it failed as entertainment because I left the film feeling slightly mind raped.

In short then. if you sit down to this just wanting to be entertained, you won't be disappointed. The film delivers just what it promises. No more; no less.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent Watson!, 2010-03-02
What a great film this is! I was hugely surprised at how good it is when I first saw it. I have always loved Sherlock Holmes and was unsure whether this would be true to the classics.

Well, as far as I am concerned, this IS the classic Holmes movie. I loved the way the relationship with Watson was portrayed, and the Victorian London imagery was a pleasure to behold. The story unfolds with magnificant charm, as mysteries unravel before our eyes, and seemingly innocuous observations become crucial to the game. There is plenty of action, some of which is portrayed almost in bullet time, with Holmes' thought processes being narrated before the actual event. It works really well.

I can't really say more without giving away spoilers. And I hate spoilers.

There must be more Holmes films made with this new cast. Not to do so would be a crime.

Incidently if you are a fan of the TV series House, you may watch this movie and see some similarities between House - Wilson and Holmes - Watson. As House was based on Holmes this is hardly a surprise!

Average rating of 5/5 Not just another war film, 2010-03-10
This is much more than a simple war story about a bomb disposal unit in Iraq. It goes to our deepest fear;death and giving our lives a real meaning. Here we have a man who faces death on a level unknown to most of us. All soldiers who go into combat face death but men who deactivate bombs face death on another plane, and on an almost daily basis as we see in The Hurt Locker. They face death; to save what? It would be facile to say to save themselves and their buddies; not the case. In The Hurt Locker, the "hero" Jenner, saves people who are possibly his enemies. The scene where he tries to save an Iraqui wired with more than just one bomb(against his will) brings that out very clearly. Is he mad or is he a man on a mission? Whatever he may be, he shows us that it is better to be true to yourself than to live a life of utter meaningless(Observe the supermarket scene)He certainly does more good trying to save lives than walking around a supermarket filling up his trolley.

Rightly attracting major awards attention, The Hurt Locker is a supreme, tense and gripping piece of drama. And it grabs your attention from the stunning opening scene, which perfectly gets across the dangers faced by the specialist bomb disposal squad that we spend the rest of the film following.

Chief among them is Jeremy Renner’s Sergeant William James, who is the focal point for much of The Hurt Locker. The film spends some time digging into his head and why he does what he does, and his approach doesn’t always leave him eye-to-eye with the rest of his squad. Renner, in surely a star-making performance, delivers a rounded, three-dimensional portrayal of a man you could easily write off as a maverick, and the film is significantly enriched as a result.

But then with director Kathryn Bigelow behind the camera delivering her best film to date, The Hurt Locker excels still further. Her gritty, haunting visuals look superb in high definition too, evoking the down-to-earth shooting style Bigelow employs, and making the most of the assorted set-pieces she puts on film. It’s the sound that really gets you too, cleverly eating up the full breadth of a ...

Director: Quentin Tarantino

Although Quentin Tarantino has cherished Enzo G. Castellari's 1978 "macaroni" war flick The Inglorious Bastards for most of his film-geek life, his own Inglourious Basterds is no remake. Instead, as hinted by the Tarantino-esque misspelling, this is a lunatic fantasia of WWII, a brazen re-imagining of both history and the behind-enemy-lines war film subgenre. There's a Dirty Not-Quite-Dozen of mostly Jewish commandos, led by a Tennessee good ol' boy named Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) who reckons each warrior owes him one hundred Nazi scalps--and he means that literally. Even as Raine's band strikes terror into the Nazi occupiers of France, a diabolically smart and self-assured German officer named Landa (Christoph Waltz) is busy validating his own legend as "The Jew Hunter." Along the way, he wipes out the rural family of a grave young girl (Melanie Laurent) who will reappear years later in Paris, dreaming of vengeance on an epic scale.

Now, this isn't one more big-screen comic book. As the masterly opening sequence reaffirms, Tarantino is a true filmmaker, with a deep respect for the integrity of screen space and the tension that can accumulate in contempla...
Average rating of 4/5 Excuse the spelling, 2010-03-02
I didn't really research this film before buying it, just relying on the Tarantino stamp, and perhaps that's why I found this wasn't what I expected - which was more akin to a humorous Dirty Dozen. In fact the "Basterds" are quite minor to events, almost more on the fringe of the story. It certainly is quintessential Tarantino, not since 'Pulp Fiction' has his penchance for a collection of dialogue driven scenes, as opposed to a run through story, been more evident. Cristoph Waltz certainly deserves the recognition he has received for his portrayal of an SS version of a stealth bomber, but the other actors hold their own to create the episodes of drama and suspense. My only disappointment was it came up short on black humour. A solid effort from a director I still consider as one of the greats.

Adapted from Darren O'Shaughnessy's book series the Saga of Darren Shan, Cirque du Freak: A Vampire's Assistant is an endearingly goofy teen-vampire tale reminiscent of The Goonies or Lost Boys. Like those kids' horror classics, Cirque du Freak is a coming-of-age tale in which maturity is hastened by horrific discoveries of alternate realms. Best friends Darren Shan (Chris Massoglia) and Steve (Josh Hutcherson) embark on a life-changing career path as monster prodigies after attending a taboo freak show starring various mutants and Madame Octa, a fluffy, neon orange, Muppetlike spider that Darren is irrevocably compelled to kidnap. Darren's petty theft results in the boys' introductions into the dualistic realm of good vampires, including the paternal Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly), and less-generous bloodsuckers such as Murlaugh (Ray Stevenson) and his Vampaneze family. Part of the fun is in learning how vampires are defined in this world; for example, they can't turn into bats but they have magic spit. The film's additional appeal is in its clever teen-vampire cultural nods, such as when Darren plays his Gameboy inside his coffin. The actual ...

I really enjoyed this movie, even though some reviews had been sceptical. The movie is fun, engaging, however often struggles decide who and what age it's target audience are. I really hope we see the continuation of the films to their natural conclusion, as this beats the melodrama of the Twighlight saga hands down.

A provocative science fiction drama, District 9 boasts an original story that gets a little lost in blow-'em-up mayhem. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, District 9 begins as a mock documentary about the imminent eviction of extraterrestrials from a pathetic shantytown (called District 9). The creatures, it turns out, have been on Earth for years, having arrived sickly and starving. Initially received by humans with compassion and care, the aliens are now mired in blighted conditions typical of long-term refugee camps unwanted by a hostile, host society. With the creatures' care contracted out to a for-profit corporation, the shantytown has become a violent slum. The aliens sift through massive piles of junk while their minders secretly research weapons technology that arrived on the visitors' spacecraft. Against this backdrop is a more personal story about a bureaucrat named Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who is accidentally exposed to a DNA-altering substance. As he begins metamorphosing into one of the creatures, Wikus goes on the run from scientists who want to harvest his evolving, new parts and aliens who see him as a threat. When he pairs up with an extraterrestrial secretly plann...

I was a bit skeptical at first - but found this to be a really good film.
I've watched it a few times now, and still think its excellent.

It felt fresh and a bit different for an Alien/Sci-Fi/Action film.
It wasn't a film based in America for once.
And - I didn't really know any of the main actors, which was refreshing.

Copley put on a excellent performance, a character that you could connect with throughout the film. I hope to see him in something again! I would really reccomend this film to anyone who hasnt seen it.

On a side note: The term "Prawn" isn't used because they look like prawns. (I mean - think about it, they look nothing like prawns!)

It's in reference to a Parktown Prawn which is a species of cricket found in South Africa. The South Africans consider the Parktown Prawn Crickets a plague and a nuisance.

So this is likely what the reference of "prawns" to the aliens is based on.

Pure. Popcorn. Entertainment. That's an exact classification of director Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The action is nonstop, with battles and explosions from start to finish. The camera (without any subtlety) exploits Megan Fox's hotness to the max. As if she weren't enough, a new sex kitten (Isabel Lucas) is thrown into the equation. Shia LaBeouf is as charismatic as ever, and fills the starring role with ease. And then there's the humour. Sam's parents (Kevin Dunn and Julie White) provided some semi-raunchy laugh-out-loud moments in the first movie, but now they take it to the next level. Sometimes it seems like they are trying a little too hard, but it is still hilarious.

As far as the “plot” goes, the writers didn't waste much time--it's really just a context for the giant-robot death matches and dramatic slow-mo sequences. The movie kicks off two years later where the Autobots have formed an alliance with the U.S. government, creating an elite team led by Major Lennox (Josh Duhamel), in an effort to snuff out any remaining Decepticons that show up. The bad guys keep coming, and it turns out that a much more menacing force than Megatron ...

Average rating of 5/5 a more complete movie than the first, 2010-03-07
while i gave the first movie perfect marks for sheer entertainment, this sequel is actually a more complete film,in my opinion,as much as this type of movie can be.for one,the story is actually much more interesting and more developed.the humour quotient is upped in this one as well.there are quite a few chuckles.some of the transformers are really neat, especially on the Decepticon side.the fight scenes between the Transformers are quite spectacular, though that isn't surprising.what is surprising is that the transformation scenes(when the vehicles change into their robot forms and vice versa were not seamless, and looked herky jerky to me.in the original film, this was not an issue.still,it's immensely entertaining.and despite a few minor issue.a better movie overall.as an aside, the movie is nominated for a Razzie Award for worst movie, which mystifies me.it's nowhere near Razzie calibre.oh,well.for me,Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a 5/5
