"Release the Kraken!" Ah, it could only be Clash of the Titans, the 2010 remake that retains the instruction to unleash the great beastie from the sea. The 1981 original boasted Ray Harryhausen's legendary stop-motion technique of animating various mythological creatures--it was his final feature project--and given the cornball approach of the movie in general, that was the main draw. The remake supplies new state-of-the-art special effects (released theatrically in 3-D) and a nicely muscular sense of momentum. Sam Worthington (the Avatar guy) plays Perseus, a demigod who doesn't know that Zeus (Liam Neeson) is his father. Perseus is selected to lead an expedition to find and slay the Medusa, lest Zeus's evil brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes, in fine slinking mode) rain down misery upon a seaport--and you just know that means the Kraken is coming. Ye gods, it's a mess, and we haven't even mentioned the witches and the harpies and the giant scorpions. But if we did, it would be clear that Clash of the Titans is a perfectly dandy popcorn epic, unpretentious and punchy. Director Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2) gets a fine rhythm going during Perseus's trek, and...

The cinematic equivalent of a half case of Red Bull chased with donuts, Kick-Ass is a giddy, violent experience--and not your average superhero movie. Based on the comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., it offers a set of heroes who are decidedly without superpowers: Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) decides he'll be just like a comic-book character, and puts on a ridiculous green suit to fight crime as the mysterious Kick-Ass. Luckily, somebody else had the same idea and comes along to rescue the incompetent crusader: Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), who also happen to be running around town wearing masks and vanquishing evil. And here we have the movie's masterstroke: Hit Girl, a pint-sized preteen who slaughters bad guys and swears like a sailor on leave (and was the focus of a measure of controversy when the movie was released). The main target of our heroes is a gangster (Mark Strong, Sherlock Holmes), whose neglected son (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, McLovin from Superbad) figures he might just pull on a costume himself and become… Red Mist! (One of the many funny things about Kick-Ass is that the superh...
Kick Ass, 2010-08-31 An excellent film. Gripping , exciting, funny, and all you could ask for in an action comic book superhero film.
I can only think that the few negative reviews are by those offended by the extreme aspects of the film (violence and swearing, often from a young girl) and left unimpressed by what they see as 'junvenile' humour. Sadly, their reactionary attitudes blind them to the irony at it's core. Indeed, there's no doubt it was meant to shock! It's a film acknowledging the absurdities and often juvenile nature of the superhero genre, while commenting on general violence in society, for fecks sake!!
Watch it as a thoughful and open minded older teen or adult and you'll be completely entertained.

A++ recommended, 2010-08-24 products arrived as described and received super fast. I'm located in Canada and was worried about getting hit with a additional cost at the door but I did not have to pay anything extra(no tax, brokerage fees etc.). Perhaps I got lucky but I definitely would purchased from again. Recommended

Better than the first film?, 2010-08-27 I went to see Iron Man 2 twice at the Cinema this summer. Excellent plot thoroughly enjoyable. Acting from Robert Downey Jr. was very satisfactory and the relationship between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts was humorous and touching. The fact that AC/DC did the soundtrack was a great surprise as I didn't know about it before I went to see it, I'm not a massive hard rock fan but in an action/superhero film it suited it down to a tee. Special Effects were very impressive and only served to enhance the story. All in all I think that Iron Man 2 was a very good sequel to Iron Man and would definitely say that it's the better of the two although the original Iron Man still holds its own. Highly recommend it to anyone who liked the first one, I'll definitely be buying it.

A provocative science fiction drama, District 9 boasts an original story that gets a little lost in blow-'em-up mayhem. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, District 9 begins as a mock documentary about the imminent eviction of extraterrestrials from a pathetic shantytown (called District 9). The creatures, it turns out, have been on Earth for years, having arrived sickly and starving. Initially received by humans with compassion and care, the aliens are now mired in blighted conditions typical of long-term refugee camps unwanted by a hostile, host society. With the creatures' care contracted out to a for-profit corporation, the shantytown has become a violent slum. The aliens sift through massive piles of junk while their minders secretly research weapons technology that arrived on the visitors' spacecraft. Against this backdrop is a more personal story about a bureaucrat named Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who is accidentally exposed to a DNA-altering substance. As he begins metamorphosing into one of the creatures, Wikus goes on the run from scientists who want to harvest his evolving, new parts and aliens who see him as a threat. When he pairs up with an extraterrestrial secretly plann...
Probably the best film in 2009, 2010-08-27 'District 9' is probably the best film in 2009, at least it is to me.
District 9 is not only good because it's quality, its also surprising because of its honesty. A refreshing slap in the face of comercial sci-fi movies, in the same quality path of Duncan Jone's 'Moon'. It's an amazing time for science fiction cinema and cinema in general. Maybe there's a hope after all.
I loved it.

Now this is how you destroy the world. Roland Emmerich's 2012 pounces on a Nostradamus-style loophole in the Mayan calendar and rams the apocalypse through it, gleefully conjuring up an enormous amount of Saturday-matinee fun in the process. A scientist (Chiwetel Ejiofor) detects shifting continental plates and sun flares and realizes that this foretells the imminent destruction of the planet. Just as the molten lava is about to hit the fan, a novelist (John Cusack) takes his kids on a trip to Yellowstone; later he'll hook up with his ex (Amanda Peet) and her new boyfriend (Tom McCarthy) in a global journey toward safety. If there is any safety. The suitably hair-raising plot lines are punctuated--frequently, people, frequently--by visions of mayhem around the globe: the Vatican falls over, the White House is clobbered (Emmerich's Independence Day was not enough on that score), and the California coastline dives into the Pacific Ocean. Unlike other action directors we could name, Emmerich actually understands how to let you see and drink in these vast special-effects vistas--and they are incredible. He also honors the old Irwin Allen disaster-movie tradition by ac...
predictable on a spectacular scale!, 2010-09-01 I read many reviews on this movie before seeing it and so, according to the vast majority of negative ratings was prepared to watch a b class movie with good special effects. The main characters are likable but you can tell who is going to 'get it' and who will make it. The vehicles just ahead of explosions and just missing deadly obstacles are predictable. The people with no honorable intentions that get their comeuppance is predictable but the because the good guys are so good and funny and the scenes so epic the movie really hits the mark. I really enjoyed this movie and I dont generally take prisoners with films.

If you’ve got too many pre-conceptions of just how a Sherlock Holmes movie should pan out, then it’s probably best that you check them in before popping this latest version in your player. Starring Robert Downey Jr. in the title role and accompanied by Jude Law as Watson, this film dispenses with some of the conventions of Holmes, and instead starts turning him into something of a period action hero. Downey Jr. is more than up to the challenge too. Early scenes in Sherlock Holmes are more Fight Club than sleuth-influenced, with the hand of director Guy Ritchie behind the camera being very clear. But the film soon settles down and starts to have some fun, with the able assistance of Mark Strong and Rachel McAdams, among the supporting cast. Yet this is Downey Jr.’s show, and he doesn’t waste the opportunity. He’s an engaging leading man at the worst of times, and he’s clearly having a ball here. What’s more, it’s immensely satisfying when his Sherlock Holmes gets down to the business of solving crimes, even though there are some really quite impressive action sequences to work through first. There are problems, of course. There...
Smart, funny and devishly dark., 2010-09-01 Sherlock Holmes, the detective franchise that never dies. And just when all hope of a successfull reboot seemed lost, this film was announced.
Action first. The fight scenes are awesome and unusualy clever, and sherlock has a new figure that makes it look probable. Next, the detective bits. They are everything you'd expect and a little bit more. Sherlock Holmes stands out as one of the best films of 2009. The plot focuses on Sherlock and Watsons "last" case together (but no, it isn't). An aclaimed magician named Lord Blackwood gets hanged but shortly after, claims that Blackwood is back surface and logic is thrown out the window.
Overall, Sherlock Holmes is brilliant. a spellbindingly good peice of cinema. BUY IT!!!
