Average rating of 5/5 A real must for Rush fans., 2010-09-01
I loved this DVD.
Presentation and the pace of the whole thing was perfect.
Most of the info presented I already knew, but it was great to see a bit more of a human face to Geddy, Alex and Neil.
The DVD extras were fine. Loved the segment of the boys in the restaurant, although Neil did come out looking a bit socially inept (not in a bad way, just kind of uncomfortable for the viewer). Alex still a joker and Ged funny too.
I've been a fan since I was thirteen and I'm in my forties now, it seems to me that as I've matured so have the boys. So watching the DVD is like watching the musical punctuations of my life as I'm sure it will be to others.
If your a Rush fan buy it now, you'll watch it again and again. If your not a Rush fan, then what's wrong with you.
So in the words of Julius Caesar to the forum, "**** you guys" (see DVD for explanation)

Average rating of 5/5 Fantastic Blu-ray, 2010-07-28
First of all, the USA release of this title is region free so you can import now if you can't wait...

I was a big fan of the Doors almost 20 years ago and this blu ray has re awakened my interest, by using only actual footage of interviews and concert performances as well as a very enjoyable and well chosen narrative by Johnny Depp this brings to life the story of Jim Morrison's short but eventful life.

Really great documentary, even my Husband who is not and never will be a Doors fan liked it.

Director: Alan Parker

An irresistible, comic drama from director Alan Parker (Evita, Mississippi Burning), overflowing and alive with passion, humor and music, The Commitments showcases some old R&B standards in a new light. A headstrong, fast-talking, ambitious young Dubliner (Robert Arkins) fancies himself a promoter of talent, and sets about assembling and packaging a local Irish R&B band. His group of self-absorbed, backbiting, but stunningly talented individuals begin to succeed beyond his wildest dreams, until petty jealousies and recrimination threaten to scuttle the whole deal. A moody, vivid and soulful exploration of the Dublin club scene as well as a showcase for some wonderful unknown actors, the film (and its wonderful soundtrack) also features the actual band covering classic soul tunes from the likes of Otis Redding and Sam and Dave. It's that combination of soul and soul music that makes The Commitments a special little film. --Robert Lane, Amazon.com --This text refers to the VHS edition of this video
Average rating of 5/5 Old ones are the best, 2010-07-23
Although this is an old movie, it is still rated, in my opinion as one of the best movies around. Gets your fingers snapping and toes tapping. Brin back nostalgia and re-live your youth. Extremely enjoyable. My teenager (16) even loved it, One up for us "oldies". Although there is some bad language, it all ties in with this movie. Highly recommended for a Sunday evening.

Average rating of 5/5 Superb concert, great audio, poor video.., 2010-08-22
Firstly let's get the criticism out of the way..As others have pointed out the video footage is often repetitive, unimaginative & not the kind of quality you would expect for something shot in 2008...

Another minor point but probably my fault.. At first I thought the audio quality to be as uninspiring as the video.. Then I realised that the default audio setting was PCM Stereo and not Dolby Digital.. Why this should be in the 21st century is a bit of a mystery.

The concert and performance however are truly sublime. The musicians are all world class & Leonard Cohen is astonishing - he is warm, humourous, his voice superb and he has the energy of a man half his age.

This is a truly magnificent concert and should be in the collection of every Cohen fan. Even allowing for the dismal video quality at less than a fiver this is simply too good to pass by....

Director: Richard Curtis

Richard Curtis turned his talents to telling the story of 1960s pirate radio with The Boat That Rocked. And while the film may not have scaled either the commercial or critical heights of some of his earlier work, there are still plenty of reasons to commend the film.

Chief among them is the excellent cast. The Boat That Rocked brings together a welcome collection of British talent, including Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost and Gemma Arterton, and then they’re joined by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Between them, they effectively recall the Radio Caroline story, as a pirate radio station is set up on a North Sea cruising yacht, broadcasting to England. Said broadcasts become wildly popular, making celebrities out of some of those concerned. Yet naturally enough, the authorities, led by Branagh’s Sir Alistair Dormandy, aren’t best pleased.

Curtis then laces The Boat That Rocked with plenty of comedy, and a killer soundtrack. But he loses his focus when editing the film down, as it’s a movie that, try as it might, still manages to outstay its welcome by a good 20 minutes. It doesn’t help that he’s simply trying to cram to...

Director: Kenny Ortega

It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumours to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in whi...
Average rating of 5/5 what a show it would have been...., 2010-08-06
While you can still tell that some of the 'as it happens' footage on this DVD was in itself orchestrated, nonetheless this is a piece of DVD memorabilia you'll want to keep to show your grandkids - one of pop's all time sensations in preparation for what would have been the live shows of the century.
Great to see in action what a gifted natural talent he was, despite what he'd done to his face over the years.
Buy it and enjoy it every once in while to marvel at the genius that was MJ.

Director: Sylvain Chomet

One of the more surprising critical hits of 2003, Sylvain Chomet's Belleville Rendezvous is a French animation that combines occasional beauty and charm with sardonic grotesquerie. People have commented about its bitchy portrait of a USA where everyone is overweight and over-helpful; it is equally nasty about a provincial France, where everything is grey and nothing is convenient. A grandmother and her dog set out to rescue a cyclist who has been kidnapped by the French Mafia and is forced to race endlessly into a receding projected landscape; she is helped by a superannuated trio of female close-harmony chansonniers marooned in American poverty.

Nothing in this film is mere chance--almost everything we see turns out to be relevant. There is also little dialogue--most of the time, sound effects and music take its place, from the irritating squeak of a mechanic's breathing to the sublimity of Mozart's "Kyrie" as a storm rages at sea. Belleville Rendezvous uses the best of traditional animation techniques and modern technology to produce something sharply funny and beautifully composed; it is not quite like anything you have seen before. --Roz Kaveney

Average rating of 5/5 Superb U2 film, 2010-08-24
Without doubt one of the best U2 documentaries i've seen, and one of the few that focusses on their more recent albums (from All That You Can't Leave Behind onwards). Tells the story of their recent success really well with plenty of stuff you won't have seen before on some of the other U2 films that are out there. I'd definitely recommended it to any fans of the band.
