Michael Jackson
It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumours to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in whi...
Pure Creative Genious!!!, 2010-03-10 This DVD offers viewers a magical insight into what would have been a fantastic event. The DVD shows just how Michael Jackson wanted to show the world that he still had it aged 50 years old. You really get a sense of just how much his music meant to him and the rest of the world. His music will live forever!!!

'This should-have-been It' - the greatest concert that wasn't to be., 2010-03-10 This DVD is a compilation of raw video footage of the rehearsals for the much-aclaimed and long-awaiting return to the stage by the King of Pop but sadly it wasn't to be and the world has missed out. However, what we haven't missed out on is this insight into what the concert could have been like. We see Michael Jackson as a polite, humble, likeable and considerate man engaging with his dancers, musicans and fellow performers as he prepares for his comeback.
The DVD isn't a polished presentation which I feel is good - it captures the informal, relaxed setting of the rehearsals and banter between those involved. It feels more real, more intimate and gives viewers an insight into how the concert is put together blending live rehearsal footage with some of the spectacular video backdrops prepared. Michael seems more 'real' than in a conventional concert performance - he sings live (unlike many other performers!), has problems with his earpiece and generously encourages his musicians, notably the guitarist, to show off her prowess. His creativity and creative input can be shared through his filmed conversations with the show directors His choreography and dance moves are as impeccable as always with every single movement spot on and his drive and energy shown in the videos belie his 50 years.
The DVD gives an insight into the real Michael behind the concerts that might have been missed had 'This is It' reached fruition.
A recommended purchase for all Michael Jackson fans.

Bought For The Wife (keeps her quiet for a while !), 2010-03-05 Not a big Cliff Richard fan but she seems content anyway, don't suppose Cliff & the Shadows will ever team up again so it's a keepsake if nothing else. Nothing wrong with the DVD if you are into Cliff it's worth buying apparently, contains quite a few Shadows well known instrumentals as well as Cliffs usual collection of his hits, video and sound quality is excellent we don't have HDMI but player upscales and we play back through hi-fi system no complaints anyway.

Fab, 2010-03-03 A great reminder of a fabulous gig. Yes I'm a "real music" fan too. I'm not sure how good it will seem to anyone who wasn't there on one of the nights, but for me it was worth every penny. I'm going to watch it again tonight.

Three generations of rock guitarists come together for It Might Get Loud, a 2009 documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth). These are not just your garden-variety guitar gods: Jimmy Page, in his mid-'60s at the time of the film, founded Led Zeppelin, who dominated the 1970s following the breakup of the Beatles. As a member of U2, 48-year-old David Evans, better known as the Edge, created one of the most distinctive and influential sounds of the past quarter century. And 34-year-old Jack White (of the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather) was described by one music publication as "the most significant rock 'n' roll figure of the past ten years." Guggenheim, who followed the three around for the better part of a year, takes us into their individual lives, past and present. There are shots of Page as a young London session musician, with the Yardbirds and Zeppelin, at Headley Grange (the estate where much of the fourth Zep album was made), and at home with his record collection. The Edge takes us to the Dublin classroom where U2 first rehearsed, as well as to the practice room he uses now (never a virtuoso soloist, he developed a...

A tonic, 2010-03-02 I had the pleasure of being at this very gig at The Wolverhampton Civic Hall, the DVD is a treat to have because it brings back total recall which is great. The DVD is great, sounds great and captured the moment of what was a brilliant night, very special. There is a second disc filmed shot for effect in Two Tone which is pretty cool. Worth every penny highly recommended

Back to their Roots, 2010-03-07 I have been a big fan of Paul Rodgers since Free, Bad Company, solo and Queen. Sadly missed the original line up and there was something missing from the subsequent line ups. Shame Boz Burrell wasn't included in this group but in 2008 this is going a long way back to that original sound so distinctive as raw 70's rock and should be experienced; the added bonus is the DVD is included. Can't wait for the 2010 tour!

2nd July 2009 Hyde Park London, 2010-03-07 Just a quick line or two. A must purchase for any real blur fan, a high quality well produced set featuring some of the best blur gig footage around. This DVD features a documentary on disc 1 and the whole of the Thursday 2nd July 2009 Hyde Park gig on the second. I haven't watched the documentary fully yet but just letting you know there is no footage of the 3rd July gig to be found here. So if you went to the Friday gig you're out of luck. Those lucky enough to attend the Thursday gig will find an incredible and well produced concert DVD with a tonne of crowd footage to play where's wally looking for themself. You can see yours truly clearly at 15min39secs in a purple t-shirt rubbing my hair. Watching this brought back great memories of last summer and gave me a different perspective on what could be the last time I/we get to see blur live.

Richard Curtis
Richard Curtis turned his talents to telling the story of 1960s pirate radio with The Boat That Rocked. And while the film may not have scaled either the commercial or critical heights of some of his earlier work, there are still plenty of reasons to commend the film. Chief among them is the excellent cast. The Boat That Rocked brings together a welcome collection of British talent, including Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost and Gemma Arterton, and then they’re joined by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Between them, they effectively recall the Radio Caroline story, as a pirate radio station is set up on a North Sea cruising yacht, broadcasting to England. Said broadcasts become wildly popular, making celebrities out of some of those concerned. Yet naturally enough, the authorities, led by Branagh’s Sir Alistair Dormandy, aren’t best pleased. Curtis then laces The Boat That Rocked with plenty of comedy, and a killer soundtrack. But he loses his focus when editing the film down, as it’s a movie that, try as it might, still manages to outstay its welcome by a good 20 minutes. It doesn’t help that he’s simply trying to cram to...
Another brilliant story by Richard Curtis!, 2010-03-05 I live in the US but ordered this from the UK site because the UK version puts back about 20-25 minutes of the film that are just priceless! They stupidly changed the title of the movie in the US to "Pirate Radio". The original title is quite obviously more clever and appropriate. I was born in 1964 (In N. Ireland!) and so all of this was happening while I was in diapers but the soundtrack is still sublime! The acting is brilliant - once again each actor perfectly cast as with Curtis' other films (Love Actually and 4 Weddings and a Funeral).
The deleted scenes are hilarious and almost constitute another mini movie unto itself! I hope one of these days Curtis just says to hell with time constraints and just throws everything into the main movie. His films are so good that no one would notice if they are 3 and half hours long.... you completely enjoy hanging out with his characters.
If you've loved Curtis' other movies you'll love this one - and if you even remotely love the music from the 60's, the sampling in this movie is brilliant.
If you don't buy this, it will be a "spectacular mistake" - to quote Billy Nighy's character at the beginning.
By the way, for anyone worried about region coding - this disc played just fine in my region 1 player here in the US.
