Richard Curtis turned his talents to telling the story of 1960s pirate radio with The Boat That Rocked. And while the film may not have scaled either the commercial or critical heights of some of his earlier work, there are still plenty of reasons to commend the film. Chief among them is the excellent cast. The Boat That Rocked brings together a welcome collection of British talent, including Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost and Gemma Arterton, and then they’re joined by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Between them, they effectively recall the Radio Caroline story, as a pirate radio station is set up on a North Sea cruising yacht, broadcasting to England. Said broadcasts become wildly popular, making celebrities out of some of those concerned. Yet naturally enough, the authorities, led by Branagh’s Sir Alistair Dormandy, aren’t best pleased. Curtis then laces The Boat That Rocked with plenty of comedy, and a killer soundtrack. But he loses his focus when editing the film down, as it’s a movie that, try as it might, still manages to outstay its welcome by a good 20 minutes. It doesn’t help that he’s simply trying to cram to...
Another brilliant story by Richard Curtis!, 2010-03-05 I live in the US but ordered this from the UK site because the UK version puts back about 20-25 minutes of the film that are just priceless! They stupidly changed the title of the movie in the US to "Pirate Radio". The original title is quite obviously more clever and appropriate. I was born in 1964 (In N. Ireland!) and so all of this was happening while I was in diapers but the soundtrack is still sublime! The acting is brilliant - once again each actor perfectly cast as with Curtis' other films (Love Actually and 4 Weddings and a Funeral).
The deleted scenes are hilarious and almost constitute another mini movie unto itself! I hope one of these days Curtis just says to hell with time constraints and just throws everything into the main movie. His films are so good that no one would notice if they are 3 and half hours long.... you completely enjoy hanging out with his characters.
If you've loved Curtis' other movies you'll love this one - and if you even remotely love the music from the 60's, the sampling in this movie is brilliant.
If you don't buy this, it will be a "spectacular mistake" - to quote Billy Nighy's character at the beginning.
By the way, for anyone worried about region coding - this disc played just fine in my region 1 player here in the US.

With the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (memorably portrayed by Johnny Depp) earning legions of fans right across the globe, the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy has proven to be one of the most popular series of films in recent times. Fortunately, there’s good reason too. The trilogy starts off with the best of the three films. The Curse Of The Black Pearl is a superb piece of blockbuster movie making, delivering lots of laughs, some fabulous set pieces and a core of good, old-fashioned swashbuckling action. With a terrific supporting cast, led by the likes of Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, its running time simply zips by in a flash, and there’s plenty of incentive to hit the play button again once the credits roll. The second movie in the series, Dead Man’s Chest was more commercially successful, but it’s not quite as strong a film. Nonetheless, there’s still plenty to enjoy, including Bill Nighy’s stunning Davy Jones (the special effects there are something to behold). And it earns extra bonus points for a terrific final twist in the end reel. And then we arrive at the closing part of the trilogy, At World...
If You Liked The Movies You Will Love The Blu Ray, 2010-02-28 I won't get pulled into the debate on how good these films are its all down to personal taste and im sure most folks have read reviews even if they haven't seen the films.
Blu Ray Quality is stunning all the way through this trilogy the action sequences appear more realistic no matter how bizzare or strange the sequence is. Blu Ray seems to have a great ability to smooth out the CGI scenes in these films and makes them feel so real. The amount of extras on the discs runs into many hours worth of material.
Love the films, the price is good and the blu rays are amazing,

The adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have given Disney their biggest hits of the decade. And while neither of the two sequels have come close to matching the first, there’s plenty for the family to enjoy across the trilogy of films here. The first film is a belter. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl introduces us to Sparrow for the first time (earning Johnny Depp an Oscar nomination in the process), as well as the talented cast of supporting characters. The fun though, is when either Depp or Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa are on the screen. Throw in lots of witty banter, some superb action sequences and a running time that doesn’t outstay its welcome, and you have a modern day blockbuster classic. The sequels are far flabbier. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest does boast some outstanding effects work, and does introduce Bill Nighy as Davy Jones, but it also meanders around a lot, and tests the patience of its audience more than it should. Not as much as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End though, which does compensate by having the best high definition transfer of t...

Flushed Away is a rip-roaring nautical adventure with a twist: The heroes are a pair of rodents braving the sewers underneath London. Roddy (voiced by Hugh Jackman) is an upper-crust house-mouse who finds himself flushed into the subterranean sewers. Eager to return to his posh home, he enlists the help of a boat-captain rat named Rita (Kate Winslet), who has troubles of her own; namely the kingpin of the underworld, the Toad (Ian McKellen), and his henchmen including the French mercenary Le Frog (Jean Reno). While technically Flushed Away could be considered part of the wave of celebrity-voiced, anthropomorphic-animal movies that hit in 2005-2006 (Madagascar, Over the Hedge, The Wild, etc.), it doesn't inspire the same sense of déjà vu. For one thing, its voice actors are less recognizable than the likes of Bruce Willis and Chris Rock. For another, its look is very distinctive. Like Nick Park's Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, it's a joint production of DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Features, and although Park isn't involved, it retains his trademark blocky look of clay animation. But animati...

It's no disparagement to describe Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s zombie-rom-com Shaun of the Dead as playing like an extended episode of Spaced. Not only does the movie have the rather modest scope of a TV production, it also boasts the snappy editing, smart camera moves, and deliciously post-modern dialogue familiar from the sitcom, as well as using many of the same cast: Pegg’s Shaun and Nick Frost’s Ed are doppelgangers of their Spaced characters, while Jessica Stevenson and Peter Serafinowicz appear in smaller roles. Unlike the TV series, it’s less important for the audience to be in on the movie in-jokes, though it won’t hurt if you know George Romero’s famous Dawn of the Dead trilogy, which is liberally plundered for zombie behaviour and mythology. Shaun is a loser, stuck in a dead-end job and held back by his slacker pal Ed. Girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) is exasperated by his lack of ambition and unceremoniously dumps him. As a result, Shaun misses out on what is apparently the end of the world. In a series of beautifully choreographed and edited scenes, including hilarious tracking shots to and from the local shop, he spectacular...

A monumental film, 2010-03-02 While Tom Cruise is always overacting, this time he succeeded in performing at his best. While the DVD offers no extras, the quality of the film itself is outstanding, with suspense created till the end, even when (one should be) knowing the plot.
Hopefully this will push film makers to look into other hero stories of those days such as that of Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr who worked together with MI6. Also that is an almost forgotten story.

A major British hit, a lorryload of laughs and some sparkling action? We’ll have some of that. It’s fair to say that Hot Fuzz proves that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s brilliant Shaun Of The Dead was no one-off, serving up a superbly crafted British homage to the Hollywood action movie. Deliberately set in the midst of a sleepy, quaint English village of Sandford, Pegg’s Nicholas Angel is sent there because, bluntly, he’s too good at his job, and he’s making his city colleagues look bad. The proverbial fish out of water, Angel soon discovers that not everything in Sandford is quite as it seems, and joins forces with Nick Frost’s lumbering Danny Butterman to find out what’s what. Hot Fuzz then proceeds to have a rollicking good time in both tipping its hat to the genre films that are clearly its loving inspiration, and coming up with a few tricks of its own. It does comedy better than action, with plenty of genuine laugh-out-loud moments, but it’s no slouch either when the tempo needs raising. One of the many strong cards it plays is its terrific cast, which includes former 007 Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Bill Bailey, Paddy Consi...
This is the best Movie Ever, 2010-03-09 I saw it with sister, and it was very funny. I've been reading comments, "it wasn't their cup of tea" Why buy?
Nicholas Angel (Pegg), an extremely dedicated police officer in London's Metropolitan Police Service, performs his duties so well that he is accused of making his colleagues look bad. As a result, his superiors transfer him to crime-free Sandford, a village in rural Gloucestershire. Once there, he immediately arrests a large group of underage drinkers, and a drunk driver who turns out to be his eventual partner, Danny Butterman (Frost), the son of local police inspector Frank Butterman (Broadbent). Danny, a well-meaning but naive police constable, is in awe of his new partner. Angel struggles to adjust to the slow, uneventful pace of the village. Despite clearing up several otherwise unnoticed crimes in short order, including confiscating a naval mine and a large number of unlicensed firearms, Angel soon finds his most pressing concern to be an escaped swan. His strict attention to the letter of the law also makes him the focus of dislike by some of his co-workers.
This is funny, if you need a laugh, it be this film :D

Brilliant, 2010-03-10 I have been waiting for this to come to DVD ever since I saw it at the cinema. It is utterly brilliant. The acting is excellent and the whole film is very atmospheric. You really care about the characters. I found it very thought-provoking; days afterwards, I was still thinking about it. Buy it, watch it, enjoy it; you won't regret it!
