Average rating of 5/5 Understated humour with a little darkness: what the English do best, 2010-08-06
This is a charming film, romantic, serious and funny. Not substantial, but it gives an authentic slice of English life - teachers, parents and institutions. It's a bit sexy and a bit sad. I was intrigued by the deleted scenes, which showed how the story could have gone in slightly different directions. For anyone who has applied to Oxbridge, or who had pushy dysfunctional parents, you'll be at home. I liked the bit at the end when the dad delivers a cup of tea to his grieving daughter. One thing I noticed, it was only 2/3rds full. Sure to cause a family argument in most households I thought...

Average rating of 5/5 Lovely, 2010-07-22
This version of Northanger Abbey is absolutely lovely. The casting for the two leads couldn't have been more perfect; the scenery and music were beautiful. Because of the time constraint it was natural that not every scene or event could be included, but there was enough to get the story in, as well as pick up on the amusing satire of the Gothic novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Average rating of 5/5 A treat!, 2010-01-06
Having missed the run of this on terrestrial tv, I bought this as a well-priced treat to settle down and enjoy at my leisure. The leisure became a pleasure as the tale unfolded in HD goodness, and episode followed episode in quick succession! The extras are good, and if you are into costume drama and Dickensian twists the story will not disappoint.

Among the very finest episodes broadcast since Doctor Who returned to our screens in 2005, this collection of "Human Nature", "The Family Of Blood" and "Blink" surely adds up to the best single DVD release of the show to date.

Let’s start with the best. "Blink" is an episode where the Doctor takes a back seat. Yet while this approach resulted in one of Doctor Who’s worst ever episodes in season two, here it generates one of the very finest in the history of the show. It’s from the pen of Steven Moffat, the man behind the best stories since the show’s return, and manages to be clever, frightening and intricate in a way that will easily reward repeated viewers. To tell any more would be to spoil it. So we won’t. Just know that while the BBC is happy to wheel out the ‘hiding behind the sofa’ cliché, this is one episode that may have you doing just that.

Nearly matching it for sheer quality is the superb double header, "Human Nature" and "The Family Of Blood". Here we find the Doctor being hunted, and thus converting his biology to that of a human. With no knowledge of his real identity, it’s down to the Doctor’s assistant, Martha, to unrave...

Contains Blink, one of the best Dr Who stories ever, even if it doesn't have much of the Doctor in it either. The other two episodes are well worth a watch too.
