In spite of the quality of the more recent Keira Knightley-starring big-screen interpretation, it’s the mid-90s BBC mini-series of Pride and Prejudice that’s still regarding by many as the definitive telling of Jane Austen’s classic.

Featuring, as many swooning admirers will already know, Colin Firth in a career-topping performance as Mr Darcy, Pride and Prejudice is the timeless tale of seemingly impossible romance. On one hand, there’s the wealthy, single Mr Darcy, and on the other is Elizabeth, a woman Darcy believes is beneath him. Across six sumptuous hours of this classic mini-series, their story then slowly bubbles, aided by some excellent supporting performances. Nods must go to the likes of Jennifer Ehle, Susannah Harker, Anna Chancellor and Julia Sawalha, to highlight but a handful.

It’s not just in front of the camera where Pride and Prejudice scores, though. The production values are absolutely outstanding, with this really a watermark for BBC costume drama production. Add in Simon Langton’s diligent direction, and this is one of those rare occasions where everything seemingly effortlessly falls into place, with outstanding e...

Average rating of 5/5 Best Sitcom of the 90s, 2009-07-02
Forget the pathetically dull `Friends' this has to be the funniest comedy of the 90s. This first series has the original Matt who is definitely the better of the two and is one of the funniest characters ever. This is a spot on comedy and the best sitcom of the 90s.

I can't quite bring myself to call this comedy genius but it comes damn close! Anyway I'm off to `wax my board' and then make some Teeeeeaaaaa!!

Director: Tim Burton

The marriage of director Tim Burton with the darker edges of the Alice In Wonderland story seems, on paper, to be an impressive match. And to a point, it is: Burton’s film explodes with colour and style, bringing a real sense of imagination to the classic Lewis Carroll stories. Alice In Wonderland isn’t perfect, though. It’s, at heart, far more conventional than you may be expecting, and the beefing up of the Mad Hatter’s role to accommodate the casting of Johnny Depp is problematic. That said, Depp’s performance is fine, even if it’s Helena Bonham-Carter who steals every scene she’s in. And Burton also wisely casts a strong supporting cast of British thespians, who don’t get enough screen time, but make the most of what they get. The end result, however, is a fun telling of an engaging story. And while Tim Burton’s take on Alice In Wonderland is far from the best filmed take on the source material, it’s nonetheless a solid family movie. It also looks stunning on Blu-ray. The colourful production design comes across wonderfully well, in vibrant 1080p, and the enveloping sound mix matches it too. And given how often the film is likely to be r...

Average rating of 5/5 Superb take the P humour, 2010-08-11
Each series is better than the previous one and this is the funiest 'lads' sitcom going. An even better flatmates comedy than Men Behaving Badly, which I do also enjoy. The characters are all extremely well played - whichever Matt you are talking about - which also helps greatly, of course. Doesn't really matter that it's lacking bonuses as it's just so outrageous.

Average rating of 5/5 Best One So Far, 2009-11-10
Having been so disappointed with the other adaptations of Wuthering Heights, I decided to watch this version based on some of the reviews on Amazon. It is definitely the most accurate interpretation of the story. Most of the memorable conversations are portrayed faithfully and Wuthering Heights is just as dark as I remembered it from the book. All the anguish, hatred & passion is here in abundance with some fine acting by all involved. This is the version I would recommend to others wanting a faithful reproduction of such a brilliant novel.
