The most widely seen movie produced by a Hollywood studio, The Sound of Music grows fresher with each viewing. Though it was planned meticulously in pre-production (save for the scene where Maria and the children take a dipping in an Austrian lake that nearly cost a life), on each viewing one is struck anew by the spontaneous almost improvisatory air of the acting, notably of Julie Andrews under Robert Wise's direction. There are also the little human touches he brings to, for instance, the scene where Maria leads the children to the hills, over bridges and along tow paths where the smallest boy trips up and momentarily gets left behind: it creates a feeling that most of us have encountered. From the opening pre-credit sequence of muted excitement as the camera roves over the Austrian Alps (photographed in magnificent colour), where little phrases from the wind instruments on the soundtrack are flung as if on the breeze, foreshadowing the title song to follow, the production never puts a foot wrong. On the DVD: On the first disc the film itself has never looked or sounded better since its original presentation in Todd AO (prints of which are said to have disappear...
Excellent, 2010-08-12 One of the best musicals ever made. A classic. Fabulous. Wonderful.
Shame it wasn't digitally remastered.

Product Description
Let danger befall him. Let the winds of fate blow where they may. Andre Moreau will strike a blow for vengeance and the French Revolution. First he must hone his skill with the blade. By day Andre secretly perfects his parries and lunges - and hides his true identity at night behind the mask of stage clown Scaramouche. A climactic duel that's one of the greatest sequences ever to lay steel to foe caps this bravura adaptation of the Rafael Sabatini (Captain Blood The Sea Hawk) novel. George Sidney (1948's The Three Musketeers) nimbly directs all the swordplay wordplay and horseplay. And Stewart Granger brings dash and deviltry to his portrayal of a hero "born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad." En garde!
scaramouche, 2009-09-02 This film started the way hollywood films always do, however it turned out to be very amusing in some places, with a brilliant and unpredicable and an enexpected twist an the end. Brilliant 5 stars.

Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938. Andrews is delightful and even fascinating as Maria, who sheds her tomboyish ways as a novice nun to accept the mantle of adulthood, becoming matron of the motherless von Trapp clan. Plummer is matinee-idol handsome and gives a smart performance to boot, and the cast of young people and kids who make up the singing von Trapp children make a strong impression. Based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, the score includes such winners as "Maria" and the future John Coltrane hit "My Favourite Things." --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

A 6 Disc collection of your favourite Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, containing the following six classic films: Carousel; The King and I; Oklahoma!; The Sound of Music; South Pacific; State Fair; Carousel - Spectacular staging dots this widescreen deluxe Rodgers and Hammerstein musical as Gordon MacRae brings a blustery energy to the lead role of Billy Bigelow, a drifter and ne'er-do-well carnival 'barker'. The troubled soul finally settles down with a good woman (Shirley Jones) but then gets stabbed to death while committing a robbery. Many years later, an angel offers the roustabout the chance to return to earth for just one day to makes things right for his unhappy wife and the daughter he never had the chance to meet. Based on the French play "Lilion" by Ferene Molnar, Carousel ranks among the better Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, making it a classic by any standard. To boot, the film's tale of love between Bigelow and wife Julie rivals that of any other 1950s musical. Songs from the outstanding score include 'If I Loved You', 'June Is Busting Out All Over', and 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. Th...

CLARK GABLE WAS ONE LUCKY DUDE IN THIS WESTERN, 2010-09-06 THE KING AND FOUR QUEENS,1956,colour,stars lucky dude CLARK GABLE,and the very beatiful ELEANOR PARKER,with,
JO VAN FLEET, JEAN WILLES, BARBARA NICHOLS, SARA SHANE.
The reason i said old Clarky is some lucky dude in this interesting western, was because as Dan Kehoe,he plays a
desert drifter who wanders into a near-deserted town, that is solely inhabited by five women, including the elderly,
Ma McCade[Jo Van Fleet]and her four lovely daughters-in-laws,including the stunning beauty Eleanor Parker as Sabina, who understandably
Clarky the old romeo takes an instant liking too. The other three ladies are Ruby[Jean Willes],Birdie[Barbara Nichols],Oralie[Sara Shane].
But apart from the five ladies, also hidden in the nearby desert is some stolen loot,of which Ma McCade is their tp protect against would be thieves.
One of the four daughter-in-laws,the beauty Sabina,is a shady character, and knowing that Dan has taken to her,she seductively asks for his help,in actually
locating the exact spot where the money is buried, digging it up,and escaping on horses together. But does the shady lady whose beauty hold a more sinister secret,
like wanting the money all to herself?. All will eventually be revealed.
THE KING AND FOUR QUEENS is certainly a very likeable western, filmed in amongst some stunning desert locales, and with the stunning flame-haired beauty Eleanor Parker.
Regards,Bill.

Frank Capra
Frankie in the '50s!, 2010-07-30 Frank Capra's second-last film (the last one was "Pocketful Of Miracles" in 1961) is a pleasant romp in the cha-cha fueled Miami Beach of the late 1950s. Frank Sinatra is a playboy dad/small-time hotel owner going for the big stakes (in ideas and women) while dancing the night away with bongo-playing, upstairs beatnik tenant Caroline Jones. His brother (Edward G. Robinson) is in town trying to get Frank to wake up to himself, marry a decent girl, stop partying and open a dreary little business of his own instead of shooting for the stars. It almost works until a millionaire ex-buddy of Frank's hits town and gives Frank "High Hopes" before it all gets tragically pear-shaped...
Okay, now if you have the Region 1 copy of this dvd, get rid of it and buy the region 2 one. The Region 2 disc is anamorphic wide screen, where Region 1 is 4:3 widescreen so you lose picture quality with A) "zooming" it up, and B) because it is NTSC to begin with. So it's a double-whammy! Region 2 is the way to go for picture quality. Otherwise, there are no bonus extras...not even a trailer. No subtitles. All you get as an "extra" is Chapter Selection.
A fun movie and Sinatra seems at home in his "swinger" role. The little boy who plays his son is Eddie Hodges, who had his 15 minutes of short-lived pop star fame a few years later with the singles "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door" and "Bandit Of My Dreams". Here he does a duet with Frank on "High Hopes". Frank sings "All My Tomorrows" over the great opening titles which feature aerial views of a pre-drug wars Miami Beach, when the place was swingin'...!!
