Excellent Series - Enlightening and Entertaining, 2010-08-02 Excellent TV series based on the advertising world in late 50s and early 60s. More than anything else it provides a glimpse of how corporate life was in that era.
Took me a while to get the hang of it but since then I have been hooked - Just finished watching Series 3.

Director Barry Levinson's eclectic film career has always been distinguished by quality scriptwriting, and Bandits is no exception, thanks to Harley Peyton's clever contribution. At the heart of the story is the onscreen chemistry between Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton, who, as the most successful bank robbers in US history, win the affections of the nation. The story is told via various flashback methods, such as the narration of a newscaster who gets an exclusive interview, while a framing device teases the audience with what the end will be at the start. But all is not as it seems. The impulsive hothead Willis falls easily for fiery redhead and frustrated housewife Cate Blanchett. The attraction is perfectly mutual until she realises the sweet appeal of hypochondriac Thornton. The resulting love triangle may not immediately seem to add up, especially as the romantic focus really ought to be on Willis' goofy cousin Harvey (a sensational Troy Garity) who dreams of being a stuntman. Originally Bandits was meant to be an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel, but here the tone is significantly lightened and the "Sleepover Bandits" are far more sympathetic character...
Brilliant, 2010-08-31 I've seen this film half a dozen times and I'm still not sick of it! The actors are amazing, but so is the storyline and the script! I would recommend this to everyone, it's a must see film!

The sinuous world of 1950s Cuban dance halls provides the setting for Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, a "re-imagining" that shares with the original movie a deep love of sexy young people pressed tightly together on the dance floor. Fresh from New England, bookish and lovely Katey (Romola Garai, adorable in the charming but little-seen I Capture the Castle) meets a fiery young busboy named Javier (Diego Luna, Y Tu Mama Tambien) at a snooty hotel. Before you can say Tito Puente, the two have found a common language in the sensual swaying of their limbs, despite the resistance of Katey's mother (Sela Ward). It's all ridiculous, of course--the dialogue is atrocious, the characters tortilla-thin, and the politics embarrassing--but that's hardly the point. Luna is dreamy, there's lots of sweaty dancing, and Patrick Swayze makes an appearance--what more can you ask from a movie called Dirty Dancing? --Bret Fetzer
Very enjoyable, 2009-12-20 Like many, I also thought this film would be a lame attempt at a sequel. So I was pleasantly surprised at how great Dirty Dancing 2 - Havana Nights was.
The music and the routines are fantastic, the lead actors enchanting (if you look at the extras, neither of them is a professional dancer, so they obviously worked really hard).
This is definitely a feel good movie, it stands on its own & is as good as the Dirty Dancing we all know and love (at least in my opinion).

Welcome to a world where Monday has a three drink minimum. Mad Men exists here and it's a fabulous place to visit, back before Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique really made much of an impact and before there were health warnings on cigarettes. It was an America on the brink of social explosion and Mad Men, which tells the story of a group of Madison Avenue advertising executives in the early 1960s, captures that surface stillness perfectly, complete with the growing tension barely contained below the surface. The show succeeds on every level. HBO famously passed on Mad Men, created by former Sopranos executive producer and writer Matthew Weiner. AMC picked it up, and thank goodness they did. From the first episode, season one becomes an essential, utterly addictive television-watching experience. Beautifully filmed and masterfully written, the show manages to present the period honestly but with little nostalgia, and as soon as you get over the constant smoking, drinking and treatment of women as little more than "girls" who get coffee and answer the phone, the complexity of these characters (especially the dashing Jon Hamm as Creative Direct...

Simply fantastic, 2010-08-11 Beautifully written, fabulously acted. Not many people have mentioned the character of Joan in their reviews. Joan is the absolute stand out character for me. She is the 60's. Saw the actress who plays her in an interview and physically she looked far removed from the character she plays which means hats off to the costume and make up department of this series. They have got it spot on. They created a red headed marilyn munroe - that bites. Fabulous. Love it. This series is the best kept secret. Nothing touches it. Don Draper isn't likeable but you can't help but fall for the coolness of the guy. (Anyone who loves those early Clint eastwood characters will love Don). The comparisons to acceptable behaviour today are real food for thought (smoking in the office, drinking in the office (scotch way before noon)the role of women in the 60's (notably Betty the repressed housewife and Peggy the working girl struggling for recognition and equal rights in a mans world)). For those not around in the 60's the show is historically interesting and accurate.
Great that the box sets are out. I can now share this with a few selected very special friends. It's been a treat to watch.

A window on a different era !, 2010-07-28 A friend loaned us the first season of Mad Men because we had never heard of it other than to see them winning awards for best drama in the States. Now we know why; this is an amazingly intelligent and meticulously detailed window on this era in the USA. The characters are all so interesting as we see them interact with each other and the producers have been so careful to recreate the physical and social environment - right down to the food packaging. It is so interesting to observe how attitudes have changed and the attention to detail in terms of wardrobe and culture is truly commendable. The cast are terrific and that's all you need to know - don't miss this chance to travel in time.

The irresistible pairing of Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler is the best reason to see Anger Management, a comedy that might have been subtitled "The Funny and the Furious". Nicholson and especially Sandler have screen personas that partially rely on pent-up anxieties, so there's definite potential in teaming them as a mild-mannered designer of pet clothing for chubby cats (Sandler) who's been ordered to undergo anger management therapy with a zany counsellor (Nicholson) prone to occasional tantrums and devious manipulation. Surely this meandering comedy looked better on the page; director Peter Segal scores a few lucky scenes (particularly Sandler's encounter with a Buddhist monk, played by John C Reilly), but a flood of cameos (Heather Graham, Woody Harrelson, Rudolph Giuliani, and others) can't match the number of laughs that fall flat. As Sandler's understanding girlfriend, Marisa Tomei plays a pivotal role in a happy ending that leaves everyone smiling, with the possible exception of the audience. --Jeff Shannon
Anger Management [DVD] [2003], 2009-12-24 This is a very funny movie, Jack at his wicked best, Adam being Adam, the script is very sharp, got this after watching very short clips on 'you tube' I just had to see the completed movie in all it's glory, it didn't disappoint....'I said over easy!'
Anger Management....'I don't need it....alright'
So much in this movie, and the DVD is feature packed 10/10

TV at its very best, 2010-07-16 Mad Men is, without doubt, one of the finest dramas ever made for TV. Set in the 60's against the backdrop of the embryonic world of advertising and marketing it follows numerous characters, notably Don Draper, as they live, drink and smoke their way through New York life. Affairs, sexism, racism, psychiatry and cigarettes, lots of cigarettes. The show doesn't really benefit from blu-ray so if you're wavering, buy the dvd box sets.
The performances in this show are stellar, the writing is top notch and the decor on the sets is so detailed you'll hardly credit it. The sequences dealing with brands we all know and love are wonderfully crafted, often cheekily cynical. A show for real TV afficianados.
