Perhaps it didn’t ignite the box office in quite the way it’d been hoped, but that’s little reason to pass over the qualities of The Golden Compass now it arrives on DVD. Based on the Phillip Pullman novel His Dark Materials--itself the start of the Northern Lights trilogy, the film isn’t without a few problems, but emerges as a quality adaptation.

And you certainly can’t fault The Golden Compass for sheer ambition. The story, for those new to the series, is primarily that of 12-year old Lyra, who is in search of her friend who has been kidnapped. Naturally, this proves to be quite a challenging adventure, not least because it’s through Pullman’s vividly imagined world, crossing dimensions as Lyra travels. The film, while toning down and fiddling with some elements of the source material, stays quite close to the book, and it proves to be a good, if not Lord Of The Rings-standard, adaptation.

What helps The Golden Compass, on top of the strong effects work and scope of the production, is a solid cast, featuring the likes of Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman and Dakota Blue Richards. And it certainly whets the appetite fo...

It is rare to find a sequel which outdoes the original concept, particularly in the world of Disney movies, but 102 Dalmatians is an exception to the rule. The high jinks and action is back, with an additional puppy--the lovable Oddball, who has no spots--and of course the cruellest of villains, Cruella DeVil. After two years of rehabilitation Cruella is released into London's community once more--but this time insists on being called Ella, "Cruella just sounds so cruel"--but has the evil one really changed her ways to become not only a pillar of society, but also a dog-loving activist? Her probation officer Chloe is not convinced and added to that her dalmatians have just had puppies.

Glenn Close is back in fine form as Cruella--this may be the defining role of her career-and with a great range of costumes and hair-dos she adds fantastic menace to the character. Added to this is the joy of having two British actors in the role of dog-loving humans (Ioan Gruffudd as Kevin and Alice Evans as Chloe)--instead of having to listen to the cod Dick Van Dyke English accent that Disney seems to love. The film also offers an extrovert turn by Gerard Depardieu as the flamboyant Fre...

Look who grew up: in Our Lips Are Sealed Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, once the sleepy-eyed preschoolers in the hit TV sitcom Full House, wake to find themselves ready for their first day of high school. But the day doesn't shape up as ultra-fantastically as in their dreams. A series of bizarre circumstances force them into a life-threatening situation in which only the FBI Witness Protection Program can help. It turns out that Mary-Kate and Ashley are their own worst enemies; the girls continually blow their cover until finally they're booted down under to the warm and sparkling recreation mecca of Sydney, Australia. Here the challenge to keep a secret takes second fiddle to the bigger challenges of fitting in with the popular group, learning Aussie lingo, and (apparently) changing into a new set of adorable clothes and accessories in almost every scene.

Fans from the ages of 6 to 13 will probably enjoy the daft antics of the Olsens, their adventures with cute boyfriends, and their ability to thwart the goofy bad guys. Also, their acting ability--although crippled by yet another bubblehead script--continues to improve. To the parental crowd, the film plays somewhat ...

This Marykate and Ashley movie was my first of their films that I had seen, and I had got it from HMV. I counldn't wait to watch it and I watched that night. It was brillant, one of their absoult best, because I've seen all of their movies. I seriously reccomend this movie. This movie was quite real and based to every day life, unlike some of the other's that I've seen. It is about these two girls, who have discovered a crime of some robbed jewel, and police are finding it. There family is a big not good at keeping secrets family. The FBI are on the case and get movie all around the world as they keep spilling the beans about the jewel. There last place is Sydney, Austrarila and they can't spill it this time. AND THEY DON'T! tHANKGOODNESS! They have a great time. Also the precious Jewel is found.

Don't waste this one on your children: buy it for yourself. A spectacular adaptation of the Anna Sewell novel, this is faithful to the source material but creates a life of its own on the screen. Told from the point of view of the horse, it recalls a time and a place that could be both beautiful and cruel. Black Beauty faced both hardship and kindness as he passed through the hands of many owners throughout his life. Some are generous, but the agonies endured by the title character may be too harsh for small children. Unfortunately, director Caroline Thompson did not resurrect her magical touch a few years later with another animal tale, Buddy. --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

As a Harry Potter fan, who has read all the books and loved them all. I knew that this film had to be darker in tone and content. It has to be to set up the scenes for the final two films to come. I found the film very visually dark, not great for me, i don't have brilliant sight! But i throughly enjoyed the film, you always knew certain characters were bad , and this certainly confirmed the cast into good and bad. I now await the two parts of "The deathly Hallows" with keen interest!

Average rating of 5/5 British film making at its best, 2010-06-19
I have lost count of the amount of times I have watched this film and it still gets to me now...this is British film making at its very best. Brassed off, Billy Elliot, This is England etc...Hollywood can keep their blockbusters and we will continue to quietly make gritty, northern, politically motivated drama that captures the true essence of modern Britain. Film4 - please continue to support this great industry!

The sixth installment of the Harry Potter series begins right where The Order of the Phoenix left off. The wizarding world is rocked by the news that "He Who Must Not Be Named" has truly returned, and the audience finally knows that Harry is "the Chosen One"--the only wizard who can defeat Lord Voldemort in the end. Dark forces loom around every corner, and now regularly attempt to penetrate the protected walls of Hogwarts School. This is no longer the fun and fascinating world of magic from the first few books—it's dark, dangerous, and scary.

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) suspects Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) to be a new Death Eater recruit on a special mission for the Dark Lord. In the meantime, Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) seems to have finally removed the shroud of secrecy from Harry about the dark path that lies ahead, and instead provides private lessons to get him prepared. It's in these intriguing scenes that the dark past of Tom Riddle (a.k.a. Voldemort) is finally revealed. The actors cast as the different young versions of Riddle (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and Frank Dillane) do an eerily fantastic job of portraying the villain as a child. While the previo...

Fresh from Stuart Little, young Jonathan Lipnicki carries on his pint-sized shoulders his every scene in The Little Vampire as eight-year-old Tony, befriender of vampires. The Scottish setting lends itself nicely to spookiness, too. A continent away from his native California, Tony's having a tough time making new friends when a band of vagabond vampires enters his life through his bedroom window. The encounter seems pure coincidence at first, but then the scary truth surfaces: Tony, though he's not a vampire himself, has "sympathy for our kind", as the dad of the bat-linked brood puts it. Visions of vampire happenings from generations past invade the kid's consciousness, and they hold the key to the clan's current gypsy-like predicament. Through his clairvoyance and, by extension, the discovery of a long-lost amulet, the mostly benevolent bloodsuckers are able to reclaim their rightful status as proper cave-dwellers in their homeland. Clueless-parent predicaments abound--Tony's mum and dad smirk at their son's vampire-obsessed imagination until the cape-draped heads of the clan drop by for a visit--and viewers of around Tony's age will find the gang's adventures elud...

Richard E Grant et al must have really enjoyed themselves making this and it makes entertaining viewing. The younger actors do not allow themselves to be overshadowed by the adults. A clever storyline and a great ensemble cast.
