Very flashy, showy violence that misses a few tricks but is very good fun, 2010-08-17 Neveldine and Taylor's film is as barmy as their previous efforts like Crank. As Kable, the convicted killer and best player in a brutal reality show wargame, Gerard Butler is convincing and enjoyable to watch. The very violent action is conveyed with fast moving battle scenes filled with gore, over the top set pieces and lots of flying dirt and bodies. The dialogue is nothing special and any noticeable 'lines' go to Michael C Hall, loving his role and overplaying it slightly as the malicious creator of the reality war show and another Sims-alike show where the players also control real people as their 'sim'. This is portrayed as a riot of neon colours, tastless tack and dodgy sex, and really helps add a contrast to the violence. Logan Lerman gets to live it up as a world-famous gamer, who's making his name playing Butler's character to the top of the league. However his plans start to go awry when Kable wants out, and outside characters with their own agenda decide it's the perfect time to intervene.
It's set up as an acerbic commentary on violence and using people, in places clearly inspired by its many predecessors such as The Running Man. However it's having too much fun with both of its imaginary worlds to stick to the point, and ends up being a slightly above average action conspiracy movie, with far above average visuals (a neon night-club with girls sat in curved seats as pendulum balls) and high octane violence, as well as some bizarre and amusing action sequences.
It's not the most original film, but it is a good action movie.

Guy Ritchie
The film career of Guy Ritchie has endured a few bumps in recent years, with a collection of generally forgettable films from a man clearly capable of so much more. Thank goodness then for RocknRolla, which marks a smashing return to form, as he heads once more to the criminal underworld of London. This time, Ritchie is playing far closer to the likes of Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and while RocknRolla may see the director playing on safer ground than of late, it doesn’t take long for the decision to be vindicated. The plot surrounds a real-estate job with millions at stake, and it gives ample excuse to unleash a collection of raw gangsters and tough guys into the mix, who each fancy a bit of the action. Thus, RocknRolla brings together Gerard Butler’s Scottish gangster, Tom Wilkinson’s London crime lord, Toby Kebbell’s drug-addicted musician and the likes of Thandie Newton, Mark Strong and Jeremy Piven too. And Ritchie’s cast serve him really well, making ample mileage out of the lines they’re given. Granted, all of this is hardly fresh territory for the director, but RocknRolla is nonetheless fu...

Like the high-revving imports and American muscle cars that roar down the streets of its south Florida setting, 2 Fast 2 Furious is tricked out to the max. While Vin Diesel opted for his XXX franchise, this obligatory sequel to The Fast and the Furious benefits from Diesel's absence, allowing returning star Paul Walker to shine while forging a lively partnership with rising star Tyrese, who fulfills his sidekick duties with more vitality than Diesel could ever muster. The Miami/Dade locations are another bonus, lending colourful backdrop to the most dazzling street-racing sequences (both real and digitally composited) ever committed to film. The plot is disposable--former cop Walker and jailbird Tyrese are recruited by the FBI to dethrone a thuggish kingpin (Cole Hauser)--but director John Singleton keeps the adrenalin pumping, enlisting a rainbow coalition of costars (including rapper Ludacris and Chanel supermodel Devon Aoki) to combine a hip-hop vibe with full-blown action while showcasing hot babes, edgy humour, and some of the coolest cars that ever burned rubber. Heed the movie's warning, kids: Let the stuntmen do the driving. --Jeff Shannon
