You'd expect the end of the world to be no day in the park, but in M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening, a day in the park is where the end begins. One otherwise peaceful summer morning, New Yorkers strolling in Central Park come to a halt in unison, then begin killing themselves by any means at hand. At a high-rise construction site a few blocks over, it's raining bodies as workers step off girders into space. And all the while, the city is so quiet you can hear the gentle breeze in the trees. That breeze carries a neurotoxin, and what or who put it there (terrorists?) is a question raised periodically as the film unfolds. But the question that really matters is how and whether anybody in the Middle Atlantic states is going to stay alive.

The Happening is Shyamalan's best film since The Sixth Sense, partly because he avoids the kind of egregious misjudgment that derailed The Village and Lady in the Water, but mostly because the whole thing has been structured and imagined to keep faith with the point of view of regular, unheroic folks confronted with a mammoth crisis. Focal characters are a Philadelphia high-school science teacher (Mark Wa...

Unfortunately, this film has poor reviews because it superficially appears to be targeted at the gory, horror, disaster movie audience, who are quite understandably disappointed. In reality it is a slower, more thought provoking story of Mr & Mrs Average caught up in something they don't understand.

The film is really a version of the prediction that 'it will all end not with a bang, but with a whimper'. I have always subscribed to Hemingway's assertion that we should not confuse motion with action, and am not a fan of films that indulge in violence in place of real action and confusion in place of plot. This film has a storyline and a plot and its story is consistent from first to last, and its basic premise is no more outlandish than any other futuristic film.

Finally despite other reviewers comments the acting isn't at all bad.

Though it bears little resemblance to the celebrated 1969 original starring Michael Caine, this 2003 remake of The Italian Job stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honour and dishonour among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlise Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once again, speedily versatile Mini Coopers (this time, the modern BMW versions) play a pivotal role in director F Gary Gray's exhilarating car-chase climax. It's perhaps the greatest product placement in movie history, and just as fun the second time around. --Jeff Shannon

I always think that what determines the longterm "watchability" of a film, is the actor's performances. Stories lose their drama the second or third time through but great acting should hold your attention. That is why I like films like The Departed, as you will want to watch DiCaprio, Nicholson and Damon over and over.

I'd argue DiCaprio steals the show with his portrayal of a Cop-come-Thug. He just seems to get better and better. Add to that solid performances from Sheen and Wahlberg and you have something of a classic.

Yes, people may claim the "original" was superior but really - who cares?

Average rating of 5/5 Oh what a night!!!, 2010-08-21
When I saw that two of my favourite comedy actors were getting together for Date Night I was very excited. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get to the cinema to see it but I knew that this was going to be a dvd I would buy so I didn't worry.
The DVD arrived yesterday and I've already watched it twice. I haven't laughted so much in a long time.
Steve Carell and Tina Fey have such amazing chemistry together and you can just imagine how much fun they had making this film.
Firstly, if you are going to buy this you have to let go of any sense of reality. This is a fun, senseless film and it is proud of it. If you realise that before you start to watch then you are really going to enjoy it.
Great dialogue, a hilarious car chase that had me falling off the sofa in tears and a brilliant pole dance routine are just a few of the highlights of Date Night.
Well worth a buy.

Director: Scott Kalvert

The pre-Titanic Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jim Carroll, the poet and musician who spent much of his adolescence addicted to heroin and shooting hoops with fellow Catholic high-school kids. As a biography, the film doesn't amount to more than the sum of its gritty scenes of smack use, violence, perversions (poor Bruno Kirby plays a lecherous coach who comes on to young Jim), and the usual scream-and-puke dramas that go along with a cold-turkey session. Director Scott Kalvert doesn't seem to realise that most people don't know who Carroll is and therefore can't possibly understand why they should care about his gutterball youth. DiCaprio, having nowhere to go with his performance but maintain Carroll's tailspin, is boring and redundant. Some kind of allusion to the literary and rock & roll life that follows the mess we're watching might have been helpful. The DVD release offers the choice of a full or widescreen (letterbox) picture, plus interviews. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Like a parody of `Requiem of a dream` but darker.Definitly not for the weak of heart. However at the same time it's as fascinating as it is darkly depressing.

Director: David O. Russell

A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster) is a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of US soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore war-time atrocities, and conscience demands their aid to Kuwaiti rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle war-time policy...

Director Peter Jackson takes a personal, risky leap in his direction of the film version of Alice Sebold's bestselling novel The Lovely Bones. Yet the leap pays off, in emotional depth and riveting visuals that transport the viewer to other worlds--even ones the viewer may not want to visit. The Lovely Bones is lofted by its star-making performance by the young Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), who plays Susie Salmon, the 14-year-old girl who is murdered early in the film, and who narrates the action from her "in-between place" after dying but before going to heaven. Ronan makes Susie as earthy and awkward as any young teen, yet her presence, and her gorgeous pale eyes, remind viewers that she's otherworldly too. The Lovely Bones takes some big departures from the book, as many critics have pointed out, but it works well on its own merits. The drama involves how (even whether) Susie's family will recover after her ghastly murder, and what happens to her killer and the futile-seeming search for justice and closure. The entire cast is stellar, including Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz as Susie's nearly destroyed parents; the composed young New Zealand actress Rose...
