After watching series 3 of this show, I felt I needed to see the story from the beginning. I started off by borrowing Life On Mars series 1 and 2 off a friend and I totally loved it! I then ordered series 1 of Ashes, and I was amazed. After watching Life on Mars, I didn't think Ashes would be as good, but I was plesantly surprised. The acting is brilliant, there are some great one liners from Gene Hunt, and I am looking forward to series 2 dropping through my letter box! A must have for anyone who enjoyed Life on Mars!

Average rating of 5/5 Ashes To Ashes - Perfect TV, 2010-09-01
Being an American fan of "Ashes to Ashes" is difficult. Nearly two years passed before the second series started being shown on BBC America so what is a fan to do? And the BBCA website was no help in finding updates as to when it would air, etc. Thankfully, due to a recently purchased portable DVD player which cares naught what region the DVD is coded for, it was order time through Amazon.UK! And I was not sorry - I blasted through series 2 and 3 in one go. This show was amazing - great writing, wonderful characters and an ending that out did the recently ended "Lost". It is not even necessary to have seen "Life On Mars" to follow "Ashes To Ashes" (although it helps when it comes down to the end).
I will miss Gene Hunt, Alex Drake, Chris, Ray and Shaz very much but am thankful for the folks that created such an entertaining and unique viewing experience.

If you haven't seen Life on Mars watch it first! Both series are absolutely fantastic, in so many ways. Love the retro music which isn't so retro to me. And the gene genie is such a hunka burning love, I'm sure much to his surprise.

Average rating of 5/5 GREAT SCRIPT WRITING!!!., 2010-09-02
I love this series as well, and the chemistry between the character's of GENE HUNT and ALEX DRAKE is just brilliant, and like SAM TYLER before
in LIFE ON MARS the actress KEELEY HAWES just draws you into her world.
I like the way CHRIS says " Yes mam/guv " to her,as he doesn't know how to address her,and SHAZ looking up to her,as she see's her as brilliant!.
All in it's a great series, just like LIFE ON MARS and i like the fact that a female has now went back in time,as she certainly stands up to
GENE HUNT,but then he likes her and doesn't want to admit it.
The last episode will have you crying forever!.

A wonderful slice of nostalgia, a whodunnit par excellence! A who's who of major Hollywood stars from the 50's/60's. The Hunting scenes were filmed on John Houston's Estate at the time in Galway Ireland and evoke a wonderful sense of large Country Houses from times past, 'yes' it's Black & White, but so are the best Movies. The reveal of who was behind the disguises of various characters played in the Movie is wonderful at the end, ranks up there with the early Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple Movies from the early 60's.

The Lakes brought writer Jimmy McGovern and actor John Simm a great deal of critical praise in 1997. Following a particularly dry period for British TV drama, the show's realistic characterisations and their painfully honest decisions hit audiences hard. Simm is a twentysomething trapped in a life of compulsive gambling, theft and being on the dole in Liverpool. On a whim he heads north to the Lake District. He expects to find the countryside quietude where his hidden poetical leanings might find a home, but instead gets caught up in a community like any other. Lies, temptation and tragedy beset every household just as much as the big city.

The focus of Series 1 is Danny's relationship with Emma (Emma Cunniffe) and the consequences of having a child. As time races by, his link to the Lakes becomes an exercise in torment when the eyes of blame fall easily upon him after the accidental deaths of four schoolgirls. Stoking the flames of a series of secondary explosions in waiting are a pair of affairs, one adulterous, the other complicated by religion.

In the far longer sequel series that came two years later, these back-stories would come to the fore. Although exploring...
Average rating of 5/5 Superlative drama, 2010-01-30
I'm only writing this review so that I can award 5 stars - I struggle to believe there are people out there who would give this amazing series any less. I didn't watch the Lakes when it was originally screened on the BBC (I was a bit too young), only watching it on DVD recently, but it was still fresh, shocking and different. Likewise my friends didn't watch it back then either, and there is now a waiting list amongst them to borrow my DVD as we are all raving about it. It is Jimmy McGovern and therefore contains lots of swearing, sex and violence (and is not a true reflection of typical Lake District life!) but this is all fundamental to the story and only bordered on gratuitous in one or two places. If you are easily offended you might want to avoid, but for me the fabulous story, script, characters, scenery and performances make the Lakes one of the best dramas I've ever watched.

Average rating of 5/5 Great Blu Ray disc, ignore the moaners, 2010-06-24
I class myself as a fan of Blu Ray, I can tell between a good and bad HD transfer and am often annoyed with releases that promise much and deliver less than I expect.

I swithered for a while about buying this disc as so many were not happy, too much grain, bad copy etc. I am pleased to say that none of this applies on the disc I had. Maybe it has been addressed at distributor level and this is a better transfer, or the most likely that anyone expecting perfect is setting themselves up for disapointment. I would say for me, the picture is as good if not better than TV broadcasts and I would reccommend to anyone who doesn't already have the DVD. It's a 1970s show, the picture reflects what the producers want to show, just enjoy it.
