Codebreaking is an inherently fascinating but not especially cinematic endeavour, which is why Enigma spices up the true story of Bletchley Park and its eclectic group of Nazi code-cracking geniuses with some fictional romance and intrigue. Dougray Scott plays gaunt mathematician Tom Jericho, haunted by the spectre of his missing girlfriend Claire (self-consciously gorgeous Saffron Burrows). Tom turns to Claire's frumpy housemate Hester Wallace (dressed-down Kate Winslet) to help him find her, but their search unexpectedly reveals the presence of a spy at Bletchley Park. Matters are further complicated by an investigating secret service agent (imperturbable Jeremy Northam) and the hostility of Jericho's superiors. Based on the novel by Robert Harris and adapted for the screen by Tom Stoppard, Enigma is unsurprisingly a literate and accomplished piece, unfussily directed by Michael Apted who keeps the various current and flashback story threads moving neatly in parallel, helped along by a languid score from veteran John Barry and a vividly realised wartime setting ("Have you heard the latest? Utility knickers--one yank and they're off!"). The contrived plot, however...

Just love Modesty Balise, 2005-06-27 If you love/like Modesty Blaise then this is one for you. The DVD is full packed with stuff. First watch the interview with Peter O'Donnell, where he talks about Modesty, how she came into his life and the development of her character. The interview with Tarantino and Scotty is a bit of a bore, Tarantino's giggle gets just too much and I skipped it after about 15 minutes. It doesn't add much to the package. The film is first class. Taking us from her childhood through to the time she started the Network, and before Willie Garvin. Alexandra Staden is just as you imagine Modesty to be. Cool under pressure and compassionate for the lives of others. Then when she gets the chance to show her stuff, not a lot of it I am afraid, but she is spot on. Killing the villain as we have come to expect, with panache, verve and just the right kind of justice. Now we need the next installment with Willie coming into the picture. Also added is a precis of all the comic stirps that are in circulation. A definate must for all Modesty enthusiastes.

Denmark released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: Danish ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Danish ( Subtitles ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Biographies, Cast/Crew Interview(s), Interactive Menu, Making Of, Short Film, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Simon Staho directed this Danish-Icelandic thriller, scripted by Stahho in collaboration with lead actor Nikolaj Coster Waldau. Copenhagen-born Ossy (Waldau) arrives in the suburbs to intrude on the family life of former friend Jimmy (Mads Mikkelsen). When they were pals at age 18, Jimmy accidentally killed a man. The two then left Denmark and traveled to the Far East, engaging in drug smuggling in Thailand until Jimmy departed, settling down in Reykjavik with his Icelandic wife Anna (Palina Jonsdottir). Ossy's arrival spells trouble, as Jimmy is caught between his devotion to Anna and Ossy's proposal of a drug deal. Shown at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival and the 1998 San Sebastian Film Festival.
buy it, love it--no spoilers in this review!, 2007-11-30 Vildspor is absolutely amazing, with top-notch acting, music and cinematography. Be prepared for a tough ride, though. The characters, particularly Ossy, make you wonder if you have the right to judge them or not. It's best to watch this film wanting to be told a story, and not a morality tale. It's made me a *huge* Nikolaj Coster-Waldau fan, who has yet to be in a bad movie. He actually co-wrote the script. One problem is that the DVD has English subtitles for the film, but none for the special features...which are worth watching anyway!

Bent, 2010-05-03 This film is a show case of tiny bit parts for now famous actors: Paul Bettany, Rachel Weisz, Rupert Graves, Jude Law, Rupert Penry-Jones; with Ian McKellen and Mick Jagger in slightly larger roles. What a star cast, but the star performance goes to Clive Owen as Max, the handsome, cock-sure young man who after a night with a German soldier goes on the run, but is eventually caught and pretends to be Jewish rather than gay to avoid the worst treatment from the Nazis. The scenes where he must persuade his captors that he's not gay are harrowing yet Max has a powerful love affair in the concentration camp that is unlike any you will have seen before. Well worth watching.

It's hard to believe Ridley Scott's handsome epic won't become the cinematic touchstone of the Crusades for years to come. Kingdom of Heaven is greater than the sum of its parts, delivering a vital, mostly engrossing tale following Balian (Orlando Bloom), a lonely French blacksmith who discovers he's a noble heir and takes his father's (Liam Neeson) place in the center of the universe circa 1184: Jerusalem. Here, grand battles and backdoor politics are key as Scott and first-time screenwriter William Monahan fashion an excellent storyline to tackle the centuries-long conflict. Two forward-thinking kings, Baldwin (Edward Norton in an uncredited yet substantial role) and Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), hold an uneasy truce between Christians (who hold the city) and Muslims while factions champ at the bit for blood. There are good and evildoers on both sides, with the Knights Templar taking the brunt of the blame; Balian plans to find his soul while protecting Baldwin and the people. The look of the film, as nearly everything is from Scott, is impressive: his CGI-infused battle scenes rival the LOTR series and, with cinematographer John Mathieson, create postcard beauty with snow...
Compulsive Viewing, 2010-08-15 Wanted this for some time as had seen parts of it on TV. Delighted to be able to watch it at leisure.
