Based on a trio of novels by Elizabeth Gaskell, Cranford is the latest in a long line of sumptuous costume dramas from the BBC. And it’s a fine addition to the BBC’s heritage too, pulling together a stellar cast for an involving, highly enjoyable series that’s well worth picking up on DVD.

The key asset Cranford has in its corner is that aforementioned cast. It’s lead by the marvellous Dame Judi Dench, and she’s in fine company alongside Dame Eileen Atkins, Francesca Annis, Michael Gambon, Julia Sawalha and Imelda Staunton. They’re just some of the residents of Cranford in the 1840s, a town in the north of England on the verge of potentially dramatic changes.

In the midst of the general feeling of unrest comes a new Doctor, Frank Harrison (played by Simon Woods). His presence further unsettles matters, thanks to his appeal to the town’s female contingent, and also his differing methods. From here, Cranford goes on to deliver an engrossing cocktail of humour, emotion and raw drama that’s quite brilliantly put together.

Cranford is, ultimately, the kind of lavish production that we’ve come to know and admire from th...
Average rating of 5/5 like visiting friends, 2010-08-04
I thoroughly enjoy these series about times not so long ago. Interesting historically, beautifuly acted, amusing as well as sad at times. I even bought my mother the set, she is 90 years old, as she loves to watch it over and over again. Like being with friends she says! Amazon made the purchase quick and easy over the internet and much more reasonably priced than the high street shop, should you have one!

Average rating of 5/5 Ashes to Ashes Series 2, 2010-08-30
If you haven't seen Life on Mars watch it first! Both series are absolutely fantastic, in so many ways. Love the retro music which isn't so retro to me. And the gene genie is such a hunka burning love, I'm sure much to his surprise.

In the sensible yet elegant hands of actresses Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls walks a fine line between sappiness and snickering and ends up both wonderfully funny and gently touching. When her best friend Annie (Walters) loses her husband, Chris (Mirren) cooks up a scheme to commemorate him: they and their friends--all fiftysomething women--will make a nude calendar to raise money for the hospital where he died. The calendar becomes hugely popular, but the success may drive a wedge between the two women's friendship. Based on a true story, Calendar Girls carefully balances the stories of several women as it follows the calendar's media explosion, becoming a surprisingly moving fable of loss, determination and the perils of fame. And let's face it--Helen Mirren is one of the wittiest and sexiest women alive, clothes on or not. --Bret Fetzer

Great film, laughed pretty much all of the way through it. Although the end could have been made slightly shorter.

Average rating of 5/5 GREAT SCRIPT WRITING!!!., 2010-09-02
I love this series as well, and the chemistry between the character's of GENE HUNT and ALEX DRAKE is just brilliant, and like SAM TYLER before
in LIFE ON MARS the actress KEELEY HAWES just draws you into her world.
I like the way CHRIS says " Yes mam/guv " to her,as he doesn't know how to address her,and SHAZ looking up to her,as she see's her as brilliant!.
All in it's a great series, just like LIFE ON MARS and i like the fact that a female has now went back in time,as she certainly stands up to
GENE HUNT,but then he likes her and doesn't want to admit it.
The last episode will have you crying forever!.

Average rating of 5/5 Well I liked it!!!, 2010-07-05
I may be one of the few but I really liked this series and was sorry they didnt make any more. I love Philip Glenister in it and practically everything else I have seen him do. I admit the accent was a bit weak in parts but have you ever heard an American trying to do a British Accent!!!

I would like to have got to know the characters a bit more as the series does leave you wanting on that score.

If you like pure fantasy you will enjoy it.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent!!!, 2010-08-18
After watching series 3 of this show, I felt I needed to see the story from the beginning. I started off by borrowing Life On Mars series 1 and 2 off a friend and I totally loved it! I then ordered series 1 of Ashes, and I was amazed. After watching Life on Mars, I didn't think Ashes would be as good, but I was plesantly surprised. The acting is brilliant, there are some great one liners from Gene Hunt, and I am looking forward to series 2 dropping through my letter box! A must have for anyone who enjoyed Life on Mars!

Watched the complete series on TV up to and including the finale of Ashes to Ashes.........fabulous. Re-watching from the start and it's even better than I remembered. Knowing 'the truth' hasn't spoilt it at all. If like me you can't get enough of the Gene Genie this set is a must.

Average rating of 5/5 Great Blu Ray disc, ignore the moaners, 2010-06-24
I class myself as a fan of Blu Ray, I can tell between a good and bad HD transfer and am often annoyed with releases that promise much and deliver less than I expect.

I swithered for a while about buying this disc as so many were not happy, too much grain, bad copy etc. I am pleased to say that none of this applies on the disc I had. Maybe it has been addressed at distributor level and this is a better transfer, or the most likely that anyone expecting perfect is setting themselves up for disapointment. I would say for me, the picture is as good if not better than TV broadcasts and I would reccommend to anyone who doesn't already have the DVD. It's a 1970s show, the picture reflects what the producers want to show, just enjoy it.
