To appreciate 28 Days, it's best to be thankful that director Betty Thomas hasn't forced Sandra Bullock into a remake of Clean and Sober. Instead Thomas has balanced her comedic sensibility (evident in Dr. Dolittle and Private Parts) with the seriousness of alcoholism and substance abuse, and she succeeds without compromising the gravity of the subject matter. Some critics have scoffed at the movie's breezy, formulaic portrait of 27-year-old boozer and pill-popper Gwen Cummings (Bullock), but this smooth-running star vehicle does for Bullock what Erin Brockovich did for Julia Roberts, focusing her appeal in a substantial role without taxing the limits of her talent. It's no wonder that Susannah Grant (who wrote both films) was one of the hottest new screenwriters of 1999. She writes "Hollywood Lite" without insulting anyone's intelligence. As played by Bullock, Gwen is an alcoholic in denial whose latest bender with boozer boyfriend Jasper (Dominic West) ruins the wedding of her sister (Elizabeth Perkins) and lands her in a month-long rehab program with the requisite gang of struggling drunks and junkies. Newcomer Alan Tudyk steals his scenes a...
Funny and True, 2008-09-05 I watched this in rehab for alcoholism. It was funny enough to raise a lot of laughs and true enough to cause a lot of tears. Excellent performances all round.

An unlikely sisterhood plots a girl-powered revenge in John Tucker Must Die. When the class-overachiever (Arielle Kebbel, Aquamarine), the head cheerleader (Ashanti, Coach Carter), and the vegan alterna-girl (Sophia Bush, One Tree Hill) discover they're all dating the same guy--namely, star basketball player John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe, Desperate Housewives)--they recruit a bashful new girl named Kate (Brittany Snow, The Pacifier) to become the ideal girl to break Tucker's heart. But as Kate uses the gang's combined wiles to lure Tucker, his interest gives her a social standing she's never had before...an intoxicating experience that may cost her a chance at honest love with another boy. John Tucker Must Die contrasts male and female behavior to cunning comic effect. The portrait of high school life is typically absurd, but the engaging cast, sprightly plot, and crisp dialogue will draw you in. It's a testament to the smooth guiding hand of director Betty Thomas (The Brady Bunch Movie, Private Parts) that ex-Playmate Jenny McCarthy's performance can genuinely be called understated. One of 2006's best teen comedies.--Bret Fetzer

A great family collection, 2009-09-05 I'd seen the first two films with Eddie Murphy and loved them, so I thought I'd take a risk and get the boxset.
I was more than pleasantly surprised at the quality of the second two films and I don't think they suffer at all for the lack of Eddie Murphy.
Based around one of Dolittles daughters growing up and learning how to use her own ability to speak to animals, whilst in the shadow of her fathers fame, the films are funny, fast paced and the characters very likable. They have a more teen flick feel but the messages are good, great family viewing.

SEASONS 3 - 6: When will they be released ?!, 2010-08-13 The best comedy series from HBO in my opinion: funny, inventive (in its use of film clips), adult (raunchy, but not crude) and, in Brian Benben's portrayal of the hapless Martin Tupper, it's Woody Allen without the nerdishness that spoils some of the latter's films. Tupper's secretary (Toby) played by Denny Dillon with her abrasive, no-nonsense, NY down-to-earth approach is the perfect complement to the dreamy, idealism which is so much a part of Tupper's character.
So, when will we be able to sate our withdrawal symptoms and get our fix of Seasons 3 - 6? Come on HBO (or your new masters at Sky): there's a market in them there programmes and in the words of that great philosopher Englebert Humperdinck... "Please release them let them go..." The gratitude of myself and fellow 'Dreamers' will know no bounds.

I Spy tried and failed to be Eddie Murphy's comeback after The Adventures of Pluto Nash. As with his previous turkey, Murphy's the least of this movie's problems; his spitfire delivery begs for better plotting and dialogue, and his teaming with Owen Wilson had even more promise than Wilson's Shanghai comedies with Jackie Chan. But this unfunny hash--bearing no resemblance to the 1960s Bill Cosby/Robert Culp TV series that inspired it--undermines Murphy and Wilson at every turn, stranding them in scenes that play well in isolation but never form a coherent action-comedy whole. It's not that director Betty Thomas is incapable; she just seems uninterested, going through the motions while Eddie, Owen and Famke Janssen play spy games in Budapest, chasing after a villain (Malcolm McDowell, wasted again) who's stolen a sleek, invisibility-cloaked jet bomber called the Switchblade. Explosions, shoot-outs, double-crosses... ignore it all, and find what pleasure you can in Eddie and Owen's aimless banter. --Jeff Shannon
good movie, 2009-08-21 I hadn't seen the series and heard it was not a popular film but being Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy thought how bad could it be and it was great!
The story is of a spy Owen Wilson and a celebrity, Eddie Murphy, joining forces to recover a super plane and it is full of action and laughs, a real rollarcoaster and i totally enjoyed it. I wish i had given it 4 stars!

Super Groovy Bradys are really Happenin in a Far Out way !, 2007-03-14 WELL !? How do you sum the Brady Bunch up in a few words ?! Cheerful, Cheesy and Ultra Camp !
The Bradys are all stuck in the 70s and are extremely kitch - they love their 'far out' catchphrases, clothes, furniture, house and attitudes. They are wholesome and pure - and therein lies their ultimate charm.
Mike Brady - never short of a long anecdote - and Carol - denser than the maids Meatloaf - head this wonderful family on a wacky adventure to raise $20k to pay a tax bill and save their home.
The children are delightful and each has their own peculiarity. With so many characters in one house it would be easy to get confused with them all or have some left out, but not in this case. And even if you are unfamiliar with the original all-round American Brady Bunch Series (like me an ignorant Brit), it matters not as the gist is easy to pick up.
There are so many funny scenes in the film - you will find your own favourites - but especially humourous to me are the story lines involving 'Marcia Marcia Marcia !' and her often overlooked younger sister Jan. Tears still well in my eyes at the sight of Jan in an Afro-wig ! "But Jan - you haven't got any friends" Or getting family planning advice from Teacher Rupaul "Oh and Jan? Come back when you're pregnant !"
Also one to watch - Marcia's lesbian friend - she's hilarious !
A real fun story with funny lines, slapstick humour and amazing retro fashion ! I LOVE THIS FILM !!

Betty Thomas directs and Eddie Murphy stars in Doctor Dolittle, the 1998 hit film which, while ostensibly aimed at children, has a high quotient of hip and even mildly gross humour. Murphy stars as John Dolittle, whom we see as a child talking to a neighbourhood dog who explains that the reason mutts sniff each others' butts is to assess their characters when first meeting them. Little John promptly tries this out on being introduced to his school principal. Warned off such social eccentricity, Dolittle stops talking to animals and as an adult becomes a respectable doctor running his own medical practice--until a bump on the head revives his capacity to understand animals, whereupon mayhem, mortification and a menagerie of needy and freeloading creatures are heaped upon his ordered existence. Murphy plays it relatively straight. It's the animals, some of them vividly enhanced by Jim Henson's animating team, who provide the real laughs here, and a thoroughly worldly, wisecracking bunch of characters they prove to be. There's a couple of hard-boiled, squabbling rats, a pigeon who complains of impotence, Rocky the guinea pig (voiced by Chris Rock) with a neat line in hip backch...
Dr dolittle, the funniest animal film ever!!, 2007-03-29

Howard Stern, Mary McCormack, Robin Quivers, Fred Norris, Paul Giamatti
Director:
Betty Thomas
Give credit to director Betty Thomas for making the notorious Howard Stern, self-proclaimed "king of all media", into a nerdish but appealing media rebel who loves his wife and family. Even if you hate Stern's rude radio show, you may discover that the underdog charm of this warm, whimsical film (based on Stern's autobiography) turns you into a fan--for the length of the film at least. Stern delivers a winning performance as the clumsy college kid and aspiring disc-jockey-turned-demon-shock-jock, who becomes an unlikely hero as he battles station managers, network executives and conservative "arbiters of decency" in the name of unfettered bad taste. Mary McCormack is fine as his understanding wife, Alison, and long-time Stern sidekicks Robin Quivers and Fred Norris acquit themselves nicely appearing as themselves. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
Truth, Justice and the Real American Way, 2000-10-28 Howard Stern is a truely brilliant man. He has unique broadcasting talents which we are seriously lacking in the UK. This film, which is based on the book 'Private Parts' brings to life the characters who have shaped the Howard Stern show with some of the less offensive scenes from his book. It shows Stern as the brilliant, foul minded and yet genuinely caring man he is and represents what the people really want. Private Parts has everything, it is funny, emotional, dirty and probably the most honest autobiography ever.
