Great movie and great documentary...., 2008-07-28 Having been an avid boarder in my teens these guys were my idols and their names were plastered all over my t-shirts, trucks, wheels and decks.
I would advise watching Lords of Dogtown first - its a really well played out movie and the young actors playing Peralta, Alva and Jay Adams are brilliant. You get a sense of what life was like in Venice in the 70's and how these guys changed the world. There is a bit of dramatic license with the Sid character but other than that its one of the best films ever.
The Dogtown and Z-Boys documentary then fills in all the gaps and introduces you to the story and the men who are legends. It shows you how these youngsters unwittingly changed the world. You get the background on all the main skaters and how their story unfolded.
I simply can't reccommend these movies enough...it made me want to stick my Vans and Bones Brigade t-shirt and go to the local ramps...only i don't own a board any more..!!

Lords of Dogtown captures the sheer kinetic joy of skateboarding like no other movie (except, perhaps, Dogtown and Z-Boys , a documentary about the very skateboarders this movie depicts). Set in the mid-1970s in Venice, CA--a.k.a. Dogtown--the movie starts with three young aspiring surfers turned skateboarders: Stacy (John Robinson, Elephant), Jay (Emile Hirsch, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys), and Tony (Victor Rasuk, Raising Victor Vargas). When alpha-stoner Skip (Heath Ledger, A Knight's Tale) recognizes the potential of skateboarding as a new sport, his surf shop becomes the centre of the boys' universe. They swiftly rise as skateboarding stars and find their brotherhood threatened by sex, money, fame, and ego--it's a common enough story, but director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) has a gift for capturing the raw messiness of life. Lords of Dogtown seems to unfold haphazardly, yet every scene moves the increasingly dizzy rise (or fall) of each skater forward with headlong momentum. The excellent cast includes Rebecca De Mornay (Risky Business), Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie), and Nikki Reed (Thir...
Locals Only, 2010-07-16 Lords of Dogtown is based on a true story highlighting the constant evolution of Skateboarding throughout the '70s and the Zephyr Team, that are recognised as one of the "original seeds" to make Skateboarding the art-form of concrete Surfing it is 'til this very day. The movie focuses around the original stand-outs of the Zephyr Team; Stacy Peralta, Jay Adans and, of course, Tony Alva. The kids are skating Pools during the '70s drought and are content with sneaking into backyards and running from angry homeowners and Cops when Skip Elbom (owner of locals-only Venice surf shop, Zephyr) makes the Zephyr Team where they enter into the Bahme-Cadillac Skate Competition (otherwise known as the Del-Mar Nationals) and get more attention than they bargained for! With their freestyle, unique approach to Skateboarding this gains them attention at more Skate Nationals which ultimately leads to fame and fortune for some, and tested, frayed Friendships for all. What happens when the Boyz are approached by big, commercial Skate teams, can they possibly leave Zephyr behind? If so, what's in store for Skip and the rest of the Zephyr team? Can these friends get back to the purity of the sport? A must of anybody who's interested in Skateboarding!
I loved this film because it was written and shot by original Z-Boy Stacy Peralta which gives it a real element of truth and I think it really captures what happened in the '70s when the Team were starting to compete. It's extremely well shot (especially during the Surf and Skate scenes), extremely well acted (my stand out performance was Emile Hirsch playing Jay Adams) and has a real '70s, sunny feel to the whole Movie. Also, the 3 main Actors who played Stacy, Jay and Tony actually learned to Skate for months on end so that they could do all the Skate and Surf scenes, which I think is brilliant and it really makes the Movie. I have watched this Movie over and over and it's still fresh and brilliant, I don't think anyone could ever tire of it!
If you haven't seen this yet, you're missing out!
Keep it local!

A gut-wrenching portrait of adolescence, Thirteen is made all the more powerful because it was cowritten by a teenage girl, Nikki Reed, who also costars in the movie. Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood), a serious good student, finds herself needing to express her anger and resentment at her fractured family life. To rebel, she pursues a friendship with the reckless, alluring Evie (Reed), who seems to have all the cocksure freedom that Tracy desires. What follows is both harrowing and compelling: Tracy becomes enmeshed in a relationship with Evie that empowers Tracy and drags her deeper into the misery she wants to escape--and terrifies her mother (Holly Hunter), who struggles desperately to hold on to her daughter's love. Thirteen makes every step on this path utterly convincing, due to the vivid script, energised direction and astonishingly alive performances from Hunter, Reed and especially Wood. It's jolting, sad and mesmerising. --Bret Fetzer

The big-screen adaptation of Twilight, Stephenie Meyer's bestselling vampire romance, is aimed squarely at its key demographic: teen girls whose idea of Prince Charming is a brooding, pale, undead teen who could kill you instantly at any moment. Such a prince is more fascinating than frightening to new girl Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who moves to the rainy-gray town of Forks, Wash., to live with her dad (Billy Burke), the local sheriff who's puzzled by a series of "animal attacks." On her first day at school, Bella appears to (visibly) nauseate her lab partner, Edward (Robert Pattinson). Turns out the scent of her blood is this vampire's "brand of heroin," and his struggle not to kill her causes an irresistible pull toward her. Whether he's attracted for the normal reasons or because she smells especially sweet to him is vague in the book and even less clear on-screen; nonetheless, Bella falls hopelessly in love with Edward, which sets her on a dangerous path when a few nomad vampires show up in town, one particularly keen on tracking the human. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), Twilight is full of funny moments--not all of which are intentional--and the casti...
