Dirty Dancing was a cultural phenomenon that now plays more like camp. That very campness, though, is part of its biggest charm. And if the dancing in the movie doesn't seem particularly "dirty" by today's standards--or 1987's--it does take place in an era (the early 60s) when it would have. Dirty Dancing spawned two successful soundtracks, a short-lived TV series and a stage musical. It may be predictable, but Grey and Swayze have chemistry, charisma and all the right moves. --Kathy Fennessy, Amazon.comFirst and foremost Cocktail is a star vehicle for Tom Cruise, then a paper-thin Horatio Alger story of a young bartender with dreams of get-rich-quick. Success is notable only for Cruise's immense likeability in contrast to a creaky plot and thinly drawn characters. Despite its shortcomings, this is worthwhile viewing for Tom Cruise fans. --Robert Lane, Amazon.com
Timeless, 2010-08-16 Absolute classic! I loved watching this film again, it took me right back to the late eighties, what a nostalgic era. This film will always be in my top 5 fave films list. The second disc is also great with lots of cuts and extras that you will have probably never seen before. This purchase was well worth it.

Excellent Comedy, 2002-12-03 Here is a gem of a film. This feelgood comedy stars Robert Downey Jnr. as the reincarnation of Cybills Shepherds dead husband who meets and falls in love with his (now grown up) daughter, played by the understated Mary Stewart Masterson. Comedy and confusion ensues as mother and daughter both fall for the same man. With a good supporting role from Ryan O'Neal as cybills Shepherds lovelorn friend, this is one of those 80's classic movies sure to appeal to everyone.

It’s inspired a hit musical. The soundtrack has sold in its millions. And it’s still, arguably, the most popular film on Patrick Swayze’s curriculum vitae. Most worrying of all, perhaps, is that Dirty Dancing is now more than twenty years old. Now that’s scary.Still, it does offer the excuse for a special anniversary release, and that’s exactly what we have here. And, to be fair, the film has never looked better. The story is still as straightforward and simple as it always was, baked just to the point where it can support the aforementioned Swayze and Jennifer Grey strutting their stuff. But Dirty Dancing nonetheless continues to work well to this day, with its rarely-rivalled, sizzling mix of romance, energy and music. Of course, it’s an easy film to pick holes in, should you be inclined to do so. After all, at heart it’s a well packaged piece of hokum, that’s never likely to contend in a Top 100 movies poll. But to pick holes would be churlish, and perhaps to miss the point. Because Dirty Dancing’s mantra is to entertain, and it delivers on that promise with some conviction. The late Emile Ardolino wisely keeps his direction zip...

As with Grease (1978) and Footloose (1984) before it, Dirty Dancing was a cultural phenomenon that now plays more like camp. That very campiness, though, is part of its biggest charm. And if the dancing in the movie doesn't seem particularly "dirty" by today's standards--or 1987's--it does take place in an era (the early '60s) when it would have. Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey, daughter of ageless hoofer Joel Grey), vacationing in the Catskills with her family one summer, falls under the sway (as it were) of dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Baby is a pampered pup, but Johnny is a man of the world. Baby's father Jake can't see the basic decency in greaser Johnny that she can. It should come as no surprise to find that Baby, who can be as immature as her name, learns more about love and life--and dancing--from free-spirited Johnny than traditionalist Jake. Dirty Dancing spawned two successful soundtracks, a short-lived TV series and a stage musical. It may be predictable, but Grey and Swayze have chemistry, charisma and all the right moves. It's a sometimes silly movie with occasionally mind-boggling dialogue--"No one puts Baby in a...

In Sister Act, Whoopi Goldberg plays a Reno lounge singer who hides out as a nun when her villainous boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) goes gunning for her. Maggie Smith is the mother superior who has to cope with Whoopi's unorthodox behaviour, but the cute script turns the tables and shows the latter energising the stodgy convent with song and attitude. A real crowd-pleaser and a perfect vehicle for Goldberg, this is a happy experience all around. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com Whoopi Goldberg returns in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, a gratuitous, poorly written sequel that contrives a reason to get her character back into Maggie Smith's convent. The "socially conscious" plot finds Goldberg being asked to relate to a bunch of street kids and pull them together into a choir. Since a bad guy is needed, the script grabs that old chestnut about a rich guy (James Coburn) preparing to close down the convent's school, and runs with it. The film is slow and unconvincing from start to finish, although co-stars Mary Wickes and Kathy Najimy get some good laughs, and the music is pretty spirited. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
Absolutely classic, 2010-04-17 Have seen both these films numerous times and never tire of them. Whoopi Goldberg. Margaret Smith and the whole cast are superb. Some people might say they are cheesy but just the thing if you're feeling down.

Great fillm, 2010-02-23 I watched this years ago with my mum and i loved it ever since. Its a classic film with bette middler in it. It shows how a pushy mum pushes her two girls to stardom from an early age then the older one leaves as she gets sick of performing baby shows and that leaves the youngest louise who becomes the star in the end.

Sister Act, Whoopi at her best, 2009-05-15 Sister Act was by far the better story than the sequel. A feelgood factor film with the highest credit going to Whoopi Goldberg who was sensational throughout. Great story line, fine acting, and music that gets your feet tapping. Still a fantastic film that can be watched again and again.
