Among Alfred Hitchcock's pre-Hollywood movies, 1938's Young and Innocent is a most unfairly overlooked classic. It's full of themes and stylistic touches that became permanent fixtures in his career. Based on Josephine Tey's novel A Shilling for Candles, the film title refers to the characters' outlook. However Hitchcock characteristically chips away at that innocence with flourishes of macabre humour, such as scenes of a dead rat at the lunch table and a hopeless conference with a defence lawyer, while suspense is heightened in a game of blindman's buff at a children 's party. The story concerns a typically Hitchcockian innocent man (Derrick de Marney) on the run, with a trivial object to find (a raincoat) that will prove his innocence. He's helped by a fiery young girl (Nova Pilbeam) who's unfortunately the daughter of the chief constable, but has some handy first aid skills. There's also an oppressive mother figure in the shape of an overbearing aunt (Mary Clare). Aside from these thematic traits, what remains impressive for viewers new or old is Hitchcock's technical set-pieces: a car sinks into a mineshaft, a railway station is recreated in miniature, and the twi...
Great film shame about the print, 2004-05-11 Young and Innocent is one of Alfred Hitchcock's less well known 30's films but is richly enjoyable and contains some very intresting period details. Although the plot is fairly standard Hitch - innocent man on the run is helped by beautiful girl who initialy suspects he did it but then begins to fall for him - the English location shooting, the classy, witty performances and a scene stealing dog all add to the immense charm of this film. The only problem is this video copy which seems to have been transfered through a London smog. The print avaliable on the US all regions Laserlight DVD is much sharper though the image seems to have been cropped somewhat, however it is superior to this video and worth getting if you have a DVD player. Even with the lack of a truly satisfactory print this film is well worth seeing and is almost, though not quite, as good as his other 30's classics 'The 39 Steps' and 'The Lady Vanishes'.

There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim-Chim Cheree") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim Emerson
Timeless Classic, 2010-06-17 What a bargain from Amazon! I never really tire of watching such outstanding musicals, especially in their re-engineered formats. This is a steal. By the living God that made you, 2010-04-30 You're a better man than I Gunga Din
RKO Radio Pictures presents Gunga Din as told through the lives of three famous comrades in Her Majesty's Service. Sergeant MacChesney (Victor McLaglen), Sergeant Ballantine (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.), and Sergeant Cutter (Cary Grant).
After 50 years of dormancy the Thugs (worshipers of the goddess Kali) raise again. They threaten to run the British out of India. Let's put it this way they are the bad guys. Their layer is stumbled upon by three adventuring shoulders. Helping them in their pursuit fights and potentially saving the day is a water boy by the name of Gunga Den (Sam Jaffe.)
The movie is fast paced with lots of marching and saber rattling. This presentation is accompanied with music only could be described as swashbuckling. The music is by Alfred Newman.

Live action Disney genius - but beware!, 2008-01-06 'The Absent-Minded Professor' is possibly the best of all the Disney live action movies from the 1960s and fans of this type of movie will undoubtedly love it. However, this particular release is not in the original cinematic aspect ratio but is rather a badly cropped pan and scan version. In addition to this, the movie is not presented here in its original black and white, but is a fake-looking recolourised version. Not a problem if, like me, you're willing to switch your T.V. to black and white when you watch it, but possibly irritating otherwise.
All in all, this is a great movie, and I love it enough to buy it even in this slightly butchered form when the black and white widescreen version isn't actually available to purchase. The five star rating is for the movie; I can only bring myself to give this particular DVD version (which also has no extras whatsoever) two stars.
